About This Pub

Ah, The Spaniard – it's one of those pubs that really captures the heart of Belfast's pub scene, with its buzzing energy and that perfect pint of Guinness that just hits the spot every time. The staff are genuinely friendly and make you feel right at ease, and the quirky posters and signage add a fun, homely touch that makes it stand out from the crowd. It's a great place to pop in for a chat and some tunes, especially if you're after a lively spot in the Cathedral quarter. But, let's be honest, it's not all roses; the toilets are in a sorry state, often dirty and smelly, which might have you heading out sooner than planned. Plus, the bouncers can get a tad heavy-handed, and little things like not letting your Guinness settle properly can niggle at you. Overall, though, with its solid 4.5 rating, it's worth a visit if you're in the area – just keep those cons in mind and you'll have a grand time.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The atmosphere is absolutely spot on – it's lively and welcoming, especially in the Cathedral quarter of Belfast, making it a great spot for a fun night out.
  • They serve a fantastic pint of Guinness; it's top-notch with great service from the friendly staff who really make you feel at home.
  • The pub has a charming, quirky vibe with lots of fun signage and posters downstairs, adding a unique touch that makes it stand out.
  • It's generally clean and the music is just right, creating a nice backdrop for chats and enjoying your drinks.
Cons
  • The bouncers can be a bit over-zealous at times, which might spoil the evening if things escalate unnecessarily.
  • The toilets are a real letdown – they're often dirty and smelly, which could put you off sticking around for more than one drink.
  • Sometimes the drinks aren't handled perfectly, like not letting the Guinness settle properly, which is a bit disappointing for beer enthusiasts.
  • On quieter nights, they might forget to call last orders, leaving you wondering when it's time to wrap up, especially if you're the only ones there.

I have had mixed experiences in the Spaniard. It an be a good atmosphere but bouncers have been really over-zealous shoving customers they have decided are too far along and actively provoking people who from my experience really didn't look like they were even that far along. Drinks and music are usually excellent however. Is my 12th favorite pub in Belfast

The lady who served my Guinness didn't let it sit, and then wipe the head off with it with a knife.... Gf accepted it. Good service, Clean, Music, it's a nice pub.

A small but lively pub in the Cathedral quarter of Belfast. Had an absolutely fantastic pint of Guinness in here. 10/10 with great service. Venue let down by dirty toilets which put us off so much we left after one drink. Sort that out and you’re onto a winner!

I love this place. It's a home away from home when I'm in Belfast. But it would be nice on a quite Monday night, if the staff gave a 'last orders' shout, so I could have ordered one last drink before leaving. Especially as it was officially still open for another hour. We were the only ones in, so a quiet 'we're closing if you want to order one last drink' would have been appreciated. Especially, as I was planning on having one of their great Dark and Stormy's for my last drink! 😁 Still my favourite bar in Belfast, though 👍

Nice bar to visit and staff very friendly, bar is small downstairs and lots of quirky signage and posters, only thing to mention is that toilets are single and could do with an update as it smells of years of urine.
