About This Pub
Ah, The Dirty Onion – it's one of those places in Belfast that just pulls you in with its infectious energy and that classic Irish pub charm. I've got to say, the live music and acoustic acts seven nights a week really make it stand out; it's brilliant for catching up with mates over a pint without forking out for entry. The food's generally a treat too – think succulent ribs that fall off the bone or those mouthwatering buffalo wings that keep you coming back. And let's not forget the huge beer garden, which is ideal for a sunny afternoon or even a cosy night by the fire when it's nippy out. Being dog-friendly is a lovely touch, especially with events like their Pooch Social that add a bit of fun for everyone. On the flip side, it's not all perfect; I've heard a few grumbles about some meals being a bit hit or miss, like the chicken drying out, and the service upstairs in Yardbird can sometimes feel a bit off, not quite matching the upbeat downstairs vibe. Still, overall, it's a solid choice for a great night out – just pop in for drinks and atmosphere if you're not in the mood for eating, and you'll likely have a whale of a time.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The atmosphere is absolutely buzzing with live music every night, making it a fantastic spot for a fun evening out.
-
The food hits the spot, especially the chicken wings, ribs, and burgers – plenty of tasty options that leave you satisfied.
-
It's super dog-friendly, with events like the Pooch Social that make it welcoming for pet owners looking to enjoy a pint.
-
That massive beer garden is a winner, perfect for soaking up the sun or staying cosy by the peat fire inside, no matter the weather.
-
Free entry and a range of merchandise add to the appeal, giving it a real community feel without breaking the bank.
Cons
-
Some dishes can be a bit inconsistent, like the chicken turning out dry now and then, which is a shame when the rest is spot on.
-
Service in the restaurant area isn't always the warmest, with a few folks mentioning it felt a tad unfriendly.
-
It can get pretty packed, especially with the live acts, so you might end up queuing or struggling for a seat on busier nights.

Located on the second floor. The grilled chicken was tender and juicy. The dips were tasty. The ribs were soft. Overall, it was a good experience.
The Dirty Onion bar and outdoor drinks area was very lively with a great atmosphere and live music - worth a visit.
Yardbird however, the upstairs chicken/BBQ type restaurant was less impressive - mediocre food and not particularly friendly service.
Come here for a drink and enjoy the atmosphere but I'd say perhaps eat somewhere else.
Popped in here late afternoon for something to eat. Tried the fried chicken yard burger and gravy loaded fries and both were delicious! The pub was pretty busy for the time of day and had live music downstairs. Great atmosphere, would definitely go again.
Overhaul great food. My Quarter Chicken was a tad dry. But the Buffalo Wings were very very good, the ribs my wife had were excellent and tender with the meat falling from the bone. The sweet potato fries were very crispy and as a nice surprise, no extra than normal ones.
They have a great offer for 2 beers and a full chicken with sides for £37 as well.
Highly recommended as someone from Greater Manchester.
Great chicken, dog friendly and welcoming staff- definitely recommend. All of us tried different things : both types of wings , spice bag (to die for ), rotisserie chicken and salad - everything was delicious ! Downstairs has a working fireplace that only added to ambience! It is my second time and will definitely be back!
