About This Pub
Ah, The Southampton Arms – it's one of those pubs that just feels like a hidden gem, tucked away on Highgate Road. From what I've gathered from the buzz around it, folks absolutely rave about the beer selection; there's a brilliant array of cask ales and ciders that are spot on for quality and value, with pints coming in under a tenner, which is a win in this city. The food's another highlight – those pork rolls and pies are proper comforting grub that pairs perfectly with a drink, and it's all served up in a welcoming space where the staff are cheerful and the vibe is just right for chatting with mates or soaking in the local scene. On the flip side, it's got that old-school charm that means no bookings or phone lines, so it's very much first-come-first-served, which could leave you out in the cold if it's busy. And while it's often a cosy spot, it might feel a tad quiet on off days, especially if you're after a bit more energy. Overall, it's a solid choice for anyone who appreciates a no-nonsense pint without the corporate feel – I'd say give it a go if you're in the area, but maybe check their website first to avoid any surprises.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The selection of ales and ciders is absolutely spot on – plenty of variety to keep any beer lover happy, and it's all reasonably priced too.
-
The food hits the mark, especially those massive pork rolls and pies; they're hearty and delicious, perfect for soaking up a few pints.
-
It's got a warm, welcoming vibe with friendly staff and a mix of locals, gig-goers, and casual visitors, making it feel like a proper community spot.
-
You can grab a seat at the bar easily, and it's unpretentious – just a classic boozer where you can relax without any fuss.
Cons
-
It's a bit tricky to plan ahead since they don't take bookings or have a phone, so you might end up queuing or missing out on a table.
-
The place can be quiet at times, which is nice if you're after a chilled-out session, but it might not suit if you're hoping for a lively crowd every visit.
-
No specific opening hours listed means you could turn up and find it's closed earlier than expected, which is a minor annoyance.

What's not to like about this place. Been coming for years and throughout the various iterations it's always served me well. The huge pork rolls, the impeccable cask, the variety of ciders, the locals mixing with the gig goers mixing with the day trippers. Seats at the bar too. Not many pubs left like this, a real treat.
We had the roast pork bap and a few different ciders as we stopped here on Sunday when it was very warm. Quite a few ciders and ales. The place was quiet.
Great pub. Fantastic ales. All fairly priced. Cracking boozer!
Recommended to anyone who loves their ale and beer. Good range of ciders as well.
What is there to dislike about this place. Great selection of quality beers and ciders. Reasonably priced. Food, fantastic. We had had the pork pie & hot pork baps. Lovely. We will do this again and soon. We had a great time.
What a perfect boozer, with an excellent selection of keg and cask beer,; two pints of lovely IPA for under 12 quid!
The team behind the bar were very cheerful, with a fabulous selection of vinyl behind the bar: Carole King was spot on!
Thank you Howling Hops 🙏🏼
