About This Pub
You know, when I think about The Sir Richard Owen, it's one of those places that just hits the spot for a no-fuss pint or a bite to eat. I've popped in a few times, and what I love most is how affordable everything is – that £1.79 cask ale from a local brewer is an absolute gem, and the food comes out piping hot with portions that'll fill you up nicely. The staff are dead friendly too, always quick to sort you out, whether you're ordering via the app or at the bar, and it's all set in this bright, colourful space that makes it feel cheerful even on a grey day. On the downside, though, it's a typical Wetherspoon, so it doesn't quite have the charm of some of the independent pubs nearby – you might find yourself thinking it's good but not extraordinary, especially if the place is buzzing and you fancy something with a bit more personality. All in all, it's a solid choice if you're after value and a relaxed vibe, but if you're exploring Lancaster, it might be worth checking out the alternatives to see what else catches your eye.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The prices are an absolute bargain – like getting a locally brewed cask ale for just £1.79, which feels like a real treat without breaking the bank.
-
The staff are always so friendly and efficient, making you feel right at home from the moment you walk in.
-
It's spotlessly clean throughout, including the facilities, which is a big plus when you're settling in for a pint or a meal.
-
They've got a great selection of local cask ales and hearty food options with generous portions that leave you satisfied.
-
The atmosphere is bright and colourful, with a welcoming vibe that's perfect for a casual catch-up over drinks or dinner.
Cons
-
It's a chain pub, so it might not have that unique local character you'd find in some independent spots around Lancaster.
-
While it's decent, there are plenty of other good options in the area, so it doesn't always stand out, especially if you're after something a bit more special at midday.
-
Service can be quick, but it might feel a tad rushed during busier times, without that extra personal touch.

Decent Spoons in a city FULL of decent alternatives, but not necessarily at midday. It's clean and the staff are friendly & efficient. Good to see a few cask ales from nearby. The bogs are clean and not too far away. And £1.79 for a nice, locally brewed cask ale is mental! I have sold my soul to the devil..... 😈
We sat outside in January as we were bike touring, ordered via the app. Super fast delivery and very friendly staff indeed.
Lovely warm food on a cold day.
Another great & local Wetherspoons good ales and food at great prices too 🍻🥗🍝😊😊
Very friendly staff, quick service and great portion sizes. Everything was cooked perfectly! Highly recommend.
This was a brilliant pub for dinner, with a bright and colourful design! This is contributed to from the different lights and the colourful patterns on the wall, counter is well presented too. Staff were really nice and signposted the menu that I enjoyed the Korean Burger with Chips from, sitting at comfortable seating!
