About This Pub

Ah, The Brown Cow – it's one of those pubs that you want to love wholeheartedly, and from what I've gathered, it often delivers on the good stuff. The staff are genuinely top-notch, always up for a chat and making sure everyone feels welcome, which really adds to that cozy, homely feel. Plus, the food's a winner; think hearty, well-cooked meals that pair perfectly with a pint. It's got a solid reputation overall, which makes it a go-to spot for a laid-back evening. But, and it's a big but, there've been some right frustrations with the bouncers recently – stories of them jumping to conclusions about IDs and even breaking them, which has soured things for a few visitors. It's a shame because it could put people off, but if you're heading there, maybe just keep your wits about you and hope for the best. All in all, it's worth a try if you're in Lancaster, as long as you're prepared for the occasional hiccup – after all, no place is perfect, is it?

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The staff are absolutely brilliant – always friendly and helpful, making you feel right at home.
  • It's got a lovely, cozy atmosphere that's perfect for a relaxed pint or a catch-up with mates.
  • The food is spot on, with excellent options that hit the spot every time.
Cons
  • There have been some dodgy experiences with the door staff, like them snapping IDs over suspicions of fakes, which has left a bad taste.
  • Recent visits have been hit or miss, with a few folks feeling unfairly treated and put off from coming back.
  • It seems like the security could do with better training to avoid these unnecessary hassles.

Visited The Brown Cow on Saturday night and had a really disappointing experience with the bouncer. My friend presented a valid, government-issued ID, but was wrongly accused of it being fake — and shockingly, the bouncer snapped it in half without warning or proper checks. The ID was completely genuine, and the way the situation was handled was aggressive and unprofessional. This reflects poorly on the venue, even though we understand it may come down to one individual. We won’t be returning, and hope management takes a closer look at how their door staff are treating guests.

The bouncer who was on the door sat 31st May needs to find a new profession. Doesn’t have a clue what he’s doing, snapped an ID (which was not a fake what so ever) and the excuse was that “real” IDs don’t snap if you bend them. Not only does he need more training, an education may be handy too.

I was extremely disappointed to enter this pub on Saturday 31st may to then be kicked out immediately by the bouncer who tore up my ID right in front of me and told me it was fake. This has always been a great, friendly pub but with security behaving like that I certainly won’t be going back. Absolutely appalling.
