About This Pub

Ah, The Penny Bank – it's one of those classic local spots in Lancaster that feels like a proper community hub, where you can nip in for a pint and soak up the atmosphere. I love how the drinks are so reasonably priced; it's easy to enjoy a few without worrying about the wallet, and they've got some cracking offers that make it even more appealing. The staff are spot on too, always up for a laugh and making sure everyone feels at home, which really adds to the warm, lively feel, especially with live sports on the telly and a bit of karaoke to liven things up. On the downside, though, it's not all rosy – some areas could do with a good clean, like the toilets that are often in a state, and there's that odd whiff hanging about that might put you off your drink. The carpets and general upkeep feel a tad neglected, and the loud music can clash with the sports commentary, making it hard to fully relax. All in all, if you're after a straightforward, no-frills pub for a casual catch-up, it's worth checking out, but keep in mind it has its rough edges that could use some attention to make it truly shine.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The drinks are reasonably priced, making it a great spot for a budget-friendly night out.
  • The staff are friendly and attentive, always ready for a chat and making you feel welcome.
  • It has a lively atmosphere with live sports on the screens and entertainment like karaoke, perfect for catching up with mates.
  • As a traditional community pub, it offers a wide variety of drinks and exciting offers that keep things interesting.
Cons
  • The place can feel a bit grubby at times, with reports of foul smells and dirty tables that take away from the vibe.
  • Maintenance is lacking in spots, like broken toilets and squelching carpets that really need sorting out.
  • The hygiene isn't always up to par, with issues like non-existent loo roll and shards of glass lying around, which is a bit off-putting.
  • The music can be too loud, drowning out the TV commentary for sports, making it tricky to enjoy both at once.

This used to be quite a fun pub. Drink prices are very reasonable and the karaoke was okay. but the whole place had a foul smell to it, no matter where you were. The toilets were disgusting, broken, and hygiene non-existent as loo roll! Some of the carpets squelched when you walk on them. It needs a really good overhaul, which I know is not easy right now ££££ but a deep clean and lick of paint in some areas would do wonders.

Nice pub with friendly staff. Drinks prices were fine. Could do with a refurb though & only one toilet was working so there was a queue.

Dirty tables...broken shards of glass that my husband put his hand in. Pointless sport TV constantly on, crap music playing loud so you can't hear the TV commentary anyhow. What a shame a building that could have so much potential and been ruined.
