About This Pub

Ah, The Ship in East Tilbury—it's one of those pubs that feels like a proper local hideaway, you know? From what I've gathered from the buzz around it, the staff are absolute stars, always greeting you with a smile and making sure everything runs smoothly, which really adds to that cosy, welcoming feel. The food's a highlight too; whether it's a hearty Sunday lunch or a delightful afternoon tea, people rave about the quality and how it's such good value—perfect for catching up with mates over a meal. And let's not forget the outdoor seating; it's brilliant for a relaxed pint on a nice day, especially since it's tucked away near some lovely walks. On the flip side, it's a bit of a mixed bag with the upkeep—some reviews point out that things like the toilets haven't changed much over the decades, which might make it feel a tad dated if you're after something more polished. Prices can be on the steeper side as well, so it might not be the cheapest night out, and there's that odd mention of food not being available on Sundays, which could catch you out. All in all, though, it's got that classic British pub charm going for it, with a solid 4.6 rating showing it's doing most things right—definitely worth a visit if you're in the area, just go in with realistic expectations and you'll likely have a cracking time.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The staff are incredibly friendly and welcoming, making you feel right at home as soon as you walk in.
  • The food is spot on, with excellent options like afternoon tea, breakfast, and Sunday lunch that offer great value for your money.
  • It's got a lovely atmosphere, especially with that great outdoor seating area perfect for a sunny day.
  • They've got a fantastic selection of beers and real ales, which is always a winner for a good pub session.
  • Overall, it's a hidden gem in Essex with high customer satisfaction, as folks keep coming back for the wholesome vibes and attention to detail.
Cons
  • Some parts of the place, like the toilets, haven't been updated in years and could do with a freshen-up to keep things modern.
  • Prices might feel a tad high for what you get, so it's worth keeping an eye on your wallet if you're popping in regularly.
  • There's a bit of confusion around food availability on Sundays—one review mentioned none was served, even though the website suggests otherwise, so it's best to double-check before heading out.

A real treasure that had no idea how nice it was until we were there. Nice staff and great outdoor seating area and looking forward to going back in the future.

It has not changed very much in the 50+ years since I first visited. Even the toilet looks tge same. It really needs to be refurbished. But it is very popular locally. Food is OK and wholesome. Prices slightly high.

Nice and clean interior and atmosphere. No food on Sundays unfortunately. Close to coalhouse fort park, which makes for a nice post drink stroll.

Fabulous family get together meal, all food was spot on and I particularly liked the attention to detail you get here that is often lost elsewhere, the ambience is lovely too. We see some afternoon teas come out while we were there which looked great too so planning that for our next meet up.
