About This Pub
Ah, The Scholar Restaurant & Bar – it's one of those places in Liverpool that you might stumble upon on Roscoe Street and think, 'This could be a right nice spot for a pint.' From what I've gathered chatting about it, it's got that classic pub charm going for it, with a good selection of beers and prices that won't make you wince, which is always a win in the city centre. I love how it's set up for watching sports; a few TVs and even a projector mean you can catch the game without missing a beat, and when the staff are on form, they're efficient and add to the cosy atmosphere. But, and there's always a but, isn't there? Some folks have had run-ins with a particular barman who's been described as rude and a bit over the top, which can turn a relaxed evening into something you'd rather forget, especially if you're there on a match day. The toilets are another sore point – not up to scratch at all, which is a shame because it pulls down the whole experience. Still, with an overall solid rating, it's worth a go if you're in the area, just keep your fingers crossed for the good days and maybe have a backup plan for the wine lovers in your group. All in all, it's a decent shout for a laid-back drink, as long as you go in with eyes wide open.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The drink selection is spot on, with a good variety of beers that hit the spot, especially if you're after something like a classic pint.
-
Prices are really affordable, making it a wallet-friendly choice in the city centre – perfect for a casual night out without breaking the bank.
-
It's got a cosy, neighbourhood feel that makes you want to settle in, and they play sports with a few TVs, which is great for catching the match.
-
Some of the staff can be dead friendly and efficient, adding to that welcoming vibe when things are going well.
Cons
-
There's been a few mentions of one particular staff member being rude and a bit abusive, which can really spoil the atmosphere, especially on busy nights like match days.
-
The toilets are apparently in a terrible state, which isn't ideal when you're just popping in for a quick drink.
-
Options for things like wine are a bit limited, so if you're with someone who prefers that, they might not be as impressed.
-
The overall experience can sometimes feel uncomfortable due to inconsistent service, leaving you wishing for a more reliable welcome.

Staff member as I describe as old, balding, rude and abusive toilets terrible won’t be going back again ruined atmosphere in pub on match day.
Popped in on a cold Sunday evening in need of the toilet. The bar was quiet but service efficient and friendly. Choice of beer was good and I opted for a pint of 1664 which I haven't had for a long time. Good pint for me but limited choice of vino for the missus. Toilets downstairs
We visited this bar on Saturday night and one of the members of staff (a bald middle-aged man) was really rude & completely let this place down. He made the atmosphere very uncomfortable, said that we could only be served by him but then proceeded to swear at us & make us feel like a complete inconvenience for making any order at the bar. We were simply looking for somewhere to have a drink and he really dampened the experience for us all.
Decent pub with a good atmosphere.
Good drink selection and cheap prices for city centre.
Plays sport but only has 3 TV’s and a projector that they don’t always use.
Cozy, neighborhood pub with friendly bar tenders. Upon request, the staff would shout the score lines at passing taxis to keep them current on the latest goals. Very affordable prices.
