About This Pub
Ah, The Royal Oak – it's one of those pubs that really pulls you in with its rich history and fantastic selection of ales, making it a go-to for anyone who appreciates a well-poured pint. I have to say, the staff there are gems; they've always made me feel like a regular, chatting away and ensuring everything's just right, especially on those cosy winter nights by the fire. It's brilliant for catching live music or just soaking up the atmosphere with a mate. But, let's be honest, it's not perfect – I've heard tales of beers not being up to scratch or the odd unfriendly encounter that leaves you a bit miffed, and the choices can feel a tad sparse if you're not just after the brews. Still, overall, it's worth popping in for a taste of that classic pub charm, as long as you go in with realistic expectations and keep an eye on what's on tap.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The beers are absolutely spot on, especially the real ales like the Blonde – they're well-kept and make for a proper refreshing pint.
-
The staff are top-notch; they're friendly, welcoming, and really know their stuff, which makes you feel right at home.
-
It's got a great atmosphere, particularly for live events or on a chilly evening by the fire – adds a lovely touch of cosiness.
-
The pub has some fascinating history and a unique vibe, like that antelope head and the stories on the walls, which make it a fun spot to visit.
Cons
-
Some of the beers can be off or not at their best, which is a real letdown when you're looking forward to a good drink.
-
Service can be inconsistent; there have been times when it's felt unprofessional or unwelcoming, which puts a dampener on the experience.
-
Options are a bit limited at times, like not having proper ciders, so it might not suit everyone if you're after more variety.
-
Opening hours can be tricky, with early starts on certain days, meaning you might miss out if you're planning a casual afternoon stop.

Looked like it would be a cosy pub inside, but it didn't feel inviting at all. Many of the beers were off, and of the few we could have, it tasted like it'd been sitting there for a while. No proper ciders either. Another pub from the Good Beer Guide wherein we don't know why it's there.
Horrible place was talking to my cousin and they chucked me out for being too drunk when I was wasn’t poor judge of characterment I do not recommend at all. The way they treated me was unprofessional should be shut down no one should be treated the way they treated me horrible establishment
Went to see a number of the acts as part of Focus Wales. A large antelope head dominates the bar area near where the performance area. Great beers, great atmosphere and sound.
Great place for real ale, known locally as the Polish Embassy read the plaque inside. Staff are excellent, ale is well kept and served perfectly. In winter the fire is very welcoming. Always made to feel welcomed by the staff. 🍺
Why is it all Joules pubs are so good? This one certainly does not disappoint apart from the understandable 4:00 pm opening on a Thursday afternoon. Only the two cask ales on today but the Blonde ale is such an easy drinker. Well worth a visit if only to read up about the history of the place - a truly impressive building.
