About This Pub

Ah, The Golden Lion – it's one of those classic pubs in Wrexham that really knows how to draw you in with its friendly staff and buzzing atmosphere. I have to say, the bar team often go out of their way to make you feel welcome, and they've got a solid lineup of drinks that hit the spot, all at prices that feel fair for a good night. The jukebox and regular karaoke sessions add that extra spark, turning an ordinary evening into something memorable, and the outdoor seating with those quirky barrel tables is just brilliant for a chat on a milder evening. On the flip side, though, it's not all roses; some of the staff can seem a bit lacklustre on quieter days, and the pints might sting your wallet a touch, especially when the place has that slightly dingy charm that's hidden down an alleyway. If you're popping in for food, the platters are alright but could do with a bit more moisture in the meats. All in all, it's a solid choice for a casual get-together or kicking off a night out, as long as you go in with realistic expectations – it's got heart, but it's not without its rough edges.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The bar staff are always so friendly and welcoming, making you feel right at home as soon as you walk in.
  • They've got a cracking selection of drinks, like splendid lagers and real ales, with decent prices that won't break the bank.
  • The atmosphere is spot on, especially with the jukebox and karaoke nights on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays – perfect for a good singalong and a laugh.
  • Outdoor seating with those huge barrel tables is a lovely touch for enjoying a pint in the fresh air.
  • The bar snacks are a nice bonus, and the toilets are kept clean and tidy, which makes a big difference for a relaxed visit.
Cons
  • Some staff can come across as a bit unenthusiastic at times, which takes away from the overall vibe.
  • Pints can feel a tad expensive for a place that's a bit tucked away and has that dingy feel to it.
  • Food options, like the meats in their platters, might be on the dry side, so it's not the best spot if you're after a top-notch meal.
  • The location down an alleyway might not be the easiest to find, and it doesn't always live up to the hype for a special night out.

My favourite pub in Wrexham. Bar staff always welcoming and friendly. Decently priced drinks and good selection of bar snacks. Spend quite a bit on the jukebox haha. Seating outside too with huge barrels as tables. Great atmosphere with karaoke on Friday's, Saturday's and Sunday's. Great pub to start off your night out

Warmly welcomed. Staff were helpful although could be more personable. I shared the roast platter and there was plenty for the both of us. Everything was tasty although some of the meats were a bit dry, other than that everything was lovely. I also shared the dessert platter which was lovely with very generous portion sizes. A great experience! The only drawback was the amount of disabled spaces which made it difficult for my nain to get in - could do with a few more.

Expensive pints for such a 'dingy' place that you have to walk down an alleyway to get into. Staff members were also not very enthusiastic and didn't seem to care if they had any customers. Music was very upbeat which helped lift the atmosphere but overall not really worth it.
