About This Pub
Ah, The Royal Oak – it's one of those pubs that really captures the heart of what makes a great British local. I have to say, from what I've gathered, it's got this warm, inviting feel that draws you in, with a fantastic traditional setup complete with a lovely garden for those sunnier days. The drinks are a highlight; they've nailed the ales and spirits, and the snacks like those homemade pork pies sound like they'd go down a treat with a pint. Plus, the staff come across as genuinely caring, always checking in and making events like birthdays or get-togethers run smoothly – I've heard some cracking stories about parties in the function room. On the flip side, though, there was that unfortunate episode where a group had a rough time when one of them wasn't feeling well, which is a shame because it could put a damper on an otherwise enjoyable night. And with the hours varying a bit, you might find yourself planning around that. All in all, it's a solid spot for a relaxed evening or watching the game, but I'd say it's worth going in with your eyes open to those occasional bumps, so you can make the most of the good bits.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The atmosphere is absolutely spot on – it's a proper traditional English pub that makes you feel right at home, with a cosy vibe that's perfect for catching up with mates.
-
They've got a cracking selection of Cask Marque ales, fine wines, and spirits, plus some classic pub snacks like homemade pork pies and cheese toasties that hit the spot.
-
The staff are top-notch; they're friendly, helpful, and always on hand to make sure you're looked after, whether you're popping in for a quick pint or hosting an event in the function room.
-
It's great for special occasions, with rave reviews about the function room for parties – one chap even had a brilliant 60th birthday bash there with excellent service.
Cons
-
There was a disappointing incident in a recent visit where someone in a group felt unwell and it didn't seem to be handled smoothly, which left a sour note.
-
The opening hours can be a bit unpredictable, with variations across the week, so it's worth double-checking before heading out to avoid any surprises.
-
While the overall ratings are solid, that one recent low review makes me wonder if things have slipped a tad lately, so it might not be as reliable as it once was.

Came into the pub on a bank holiday weekend looking for a few drinks with family and friends. One of the members of the group became visibly unwell during the visit (they were not being loud, silly or disruptive - just sat at the table clearly not feeling well. She had only had a couple of drinks at this point) and needed to use the toilet as she felt like she needed to be sick. We went into the male toilets (I checked and no one else was in the toilet at the time) as she did not want to go on her own. As soon as we entered the toilet - a member of staff came storming into the toilet asking us to leave the pub immediately. After explaining to the member of staff that she wasn’t feeling well at all, he told us she needed to leave the the toilet and go in the female toilets and after needed to leave the pub.
After she came out the toilet, she sat at the table to have a glass of water to try and settle herself down before leaving. The same member of staff immediately came back over to the table and told us to leave. I again explained that she was just taking a few moments to settle down before we left and he would not leave the table until he saw that we had booked an uber. The member of the group was visibly in distress and was upset about the situation but the member of staff showed no compassion whatsoever. Didn’t come over and ask if she was okay or offer a glass of water. Just immediately asked us to leave the pub and not return. I’d add that this was at 17:00 and we had only had a couple of drinks before we entered the pub (if this was at peak time and full of people being loud and drunk, I’d understand the need to to get us out, but it wasn’t) she was clearly unwell from something other than alcohol.
Other customers at the pub asked us if we were okay and if there was anything we needed as she was clearly distressed and upset. But nothing from the member of staff who was more focussed on getting us out than helping.
Extremely disappointed with how it was handled by the member of staff and felt pressured to leave before making sure our member of the group was okay. Clear lack of empathy and compassion towards paying customers and felt extremely unwelcome and unhelpful. Will not be returning to this establishment in future and will be avoiding people away from it due to the attitude towards customers from certain members of staff.
Went in early 6pm with a couple of mates to have some food it was packed we found a table in the back room and staff were very helpful and pleasant,we all had pie and chips and it was lovely, fully recommend this pub and food.
Just had my 60th bash in the Oak’s function room. Excellent service all round, big shout out to Grace who helped host the event and was so accommodating and nothing was too much trouble. And James for sorting the logistics beforehand , including the photo slide show. Pulled pork batches and mushroom alternative also went down a treat. It was a squash and a squeeze for the 60 guests but didn’t detract from a fabulous evening.
Always busy great atmosphere. Really great service. Staff always coming round to see if you would like another drink. Best Bass
Nice pub, live sport and a nice choice of beers. Friendly staff.
