About This Pub

Ah, The Rising Sun – it's one of those pubs that just feels like a proper local gem in Chelmsford, you know? From what I've gathered from the reviews and their website, it's got this inviting, fun atmosphere that's perfect for a casual get-together. The food stands out a mile; those South African specials and burgers sound mouthwatering, and it's clear folks are raving about them. Plus, being dog-friendly with treats on the bar and a kids' menu makes it so accessible – I love that it's not just for the lads down the pub. The beer garden and games add a nice touch for sunny days, and events like quizzes keep things lively. On the flip side, though, parking's a right pain, and there are a few tales of less than stellar service that might leave you a bit miffed. Still, with a solid 4.2 rating overall, it seems the good times outweigh the bad, so I'd say it's worth a visit if you're in the area – just plan ahead and keep your expectations balanced!

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The food is absolutely spot on, with delicious burgers and traditional South African dishes that really hit the spot – perfect for a hearty meal with mates.
  • It's super family and dog-friendly, which is brilliant if you're popping in with the kids or your furry friend; they've even got treats for dogs and a kids' menu.
  • The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, with a lovely beer garden, games like table tennis, and events such as quiz nights that make it a fun spot to hang out.
  • Staff are generally friendly and attentive, as mentioned in several reviews, making you feel right at home from the moment you walk in.
  • They've got a great selection of beers, IPAs, ales, and wines, plus they show Sky Sports, so it's ideal for catching a match with a pint.
Cons
  • Parking is a bit of a nightmare, with limited spots right outside, so you might end up hunting around nearby streets, which can be frustrating after a long day.
  • There have been a couple of reports of rude or unprofessional behaviour from the staff or owners, which is a shame and could put a dampener on your visit.
  • The kitchen hours are a tad inconsistent, with some days closed or early finishes, so it's worth checking ahead if you're planning to grab a bite.
  • Opening times vary between seasons, which might catch you out if you're not keeping an eye on their updates, like following them on Instagram.

I have always been skeptical at ordering chicken wings. In a pub, they were the best chicken wings I've had in a long time, big juicy with a nice kick if you order the buffalo 😋 , also I wanted to mention that Victoria behind the bar, as we came into the pub, we was greeting with a nice welcome, it's nice to come to a pub and actually have friendly, happy bar staff 10/10 this is now going to be my regular pub when I come to chelmsford,

Evan, his family and his team have played out of their boots catering to 80+ people for a private event. No request was too much, food and drink served quickly and with a smile. 100% will return for their quiz nights and burger specials, and look forward to spending more time at The Rising Sun!

We visited to watch a football match (some inside watching, with some outside including children). We were really impressed with the decor. The outside area is lovely, including a sandpit for under 5s and a table tennis table. We spotted (but didn't use) games and story books. We will definitely return!

Place has been completely revamped and has a nice ambience with friendly staff. Good selection of beers and well chosen spirits - though would like an occasional guest ale. Recommend giving it a try. Really nice beer garden, great for the summer. Also has a table tennis table (ask the bar staff for the bats).
