About This Pub
Oh, The Queen's Head in Chelmsford is one of those pubs that really knows how to pour a proper pint – the real ales are top drawer, and that fireplace adds such a nice touch on a chilly day, making it feel like a proper snug. It's brilliant if you're in the mood for a peaceful catch-up without the crowds, and it's clear the locals love it, which gives it a warm, familiar feel. On the flip side, though, it can get a bit too mellow for its own good, sometimes feeling more like a quiet nook than a buzzing spot, and the staff aren't exactly the chatty types, which might make your visit a smidge underwhelming. Still, if you're after quality drinks in a straightforward setting, it's worth popping in, but maybe not if you're hoping for a lively night out. All in all, it's a decent local with its strengths in the brews, but it does have room to improve on the atmosphere front.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The beer selection is absolutely spot on, with excellent real ales like the Crouch Vale Anchor Street Porter that really hit the spot.
-
It's got a lovely fireplace and a cosy interior, making it a perfect hideaway for a quiet evening when you fancy some warmth and relaxation.
-
The pub feels welcoming to visitors, and it's popular with the locals, giving it that genuine community vibe.
Cons
-
It can be a bit too quiet and subdued at times, almost like stepping into a sleepy corner rather than a lively spot.
-
The staff are more business-like and not always up for a chat, which might leave you feeling a tad overlooked.
-
There's a lack of real ambiance and character; it could do with a freshen-up to make it more inviting overall.

Lovely pub, very popular with locals, but treats visitors warmly. Good fire place too
Very quiet pub with a subdued atmosphere but the beer is excellent. I had the Crouch Vale Anchor Street Porter which was very tasty. Pleasant enough pub to visit but the serving staff were more on the business-like side rather than the conversational side. Handy place to go for a pint if you are at the County Ground for Essex cricket but note that no food is served.
Usually pretty much like a graveyard with a limited selection on. BUT beer is always very good and a nice layout and fire inside. Good if you want a quiet one
Deceptively big on the inside . Looking from outside you would expect it to be cramped, but there is a large conservatory on the back . Nice log fire going on our visit, not very busy and only one hand pull on ! .Think they had some others, probably craft. These were advertised on boards on the wall .Staff were welcoming and would happily revisit the pub.
The pub has excellent real ales, however, there's no ambiance or character to the place and definitely needs a refurb. The manager is somewhat to be desired, at best he's grumpy and at worst he's just rude and offensive. Other members of staff aren't that much better. If you want a decent ale in a decent real ale pub give Queens Head a miss and try The Orange Tree which is a 45 second walk away. It explains why Queens head is like graveyard most nights, Crouch Vale Brewery time you got yourself a new pub manager.
