About This Pub
Ah, let me tell you about the Sir Evelyn Wood – it's this little hidden gem in Chelmsford that's just spot on if you're after a proper traditional pub experience. I've heard from folks who've popped in that the real ales are an absolute highlight; they're serving up cracking options like a smooth porter or a pale ale, all straight from the barrel and in prime condition. The staff really make the place shine too – they're so welcoming and chatty, it feels like catching up with old mates behind the bar. And on a sunny day, that garden area is just lovely for sitting out with a pint, soaking up the fresh air. But, fair's fair, it's not without its downsides. There's no food to speak of, so if you're peckish, you might end up nipping off for a bite elsewhere, which can be a bit of a nuisance. Some have mentioned it feels a tad quiet, especially since they've done away with the jukebox and pool table, making it more of a place for a mellow chat than a boisterous night out. Plus, with it being closed on Mondays and not opening until the afternoon most days, it might not fit everyone's schedule. Overall, though, if you're in the mood for solid beers and a friendly vibe without the hustle, it's well worth a visit – just keep those points in mind for a balanced outing!
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The real ales are top-notch, with a great selection like Hop Monster and Gorgeous George that are always served fresh and in fine form.
-
The staff are incredibly friendly and welcoming, making you feel right at home from the moment you walk in.
-
It's got a lovely little garden and outdoor area, perfect for enjoying a drink in the sunshine on a nice day.
-
Ideal for a peaceful pint; it's a quiet spot where you can relax and have a good chat without the crowds.
Cons
-
No food on offer, so if you're after a meal with your drink, you'll need to head elsewhere or bring your own snacks.
-
The atmosphere can be a bit subdued for some, with no jukebox or pool table anymore, making it feel quiet to the point of lacking buzz.
-
It's closed on Mondays and has limited hours during the week, which might not suit everyone looking for a spontaneous evening out.
-
Being tucked away on a residential road, it might not be the easiest place to find if you're not familiar with the area.

Lovely little traditional pub tucked away in a small residential road .
Great garden and sitting out area.
They don't sell food, hence the no stars !
Friendly and welcoming staff .
Nice place for a quiet drink. Warm welcome and good beer
Stopped in for a drink on the way home from Hylands and had a great time. Lovely lady behind the bar, the drinks are well priced and everyone at the bar seemed chatty (very unusual for Chelmsford). Small garden but was lovely in the sunshine. Definitely will go back😁
Friendly local pub with great selection of real ales. God bless Trish who’s a great landlady. Beers are all in top form here.
If you want a quiet pint then this is your place 😂. No atmosphere no nothing 😔. Used to be a great place with a jukebox but that's gone. Used to have a pool table but that's gone. Tell the truth. They do great beer with good service. But just no atmosphere.
