About This Pub
Ah, The Barrel House – it's one of those places that really captures the heart of what makes a good pub great, tucked away in Kendal as part of the Bowness Bay Brewery. From what I've gathered from the buzz around it, the atmosphere is spot-on; it's all about that friendly, welcoming energy where you can kick back with friends, soak in the unique touches like the historic oak bar and repurposed materials, and dive into some seriously tasty craft beers. I love how they've made it dog-friendly with those cosy outdoor booths – perfect for a lazy afternoon pint. And if you're into a bit more adventure, the brewery tours and live events add a fun twist that keeps things lively. On the flip side, though, it's not all smooth sailing; some folks have mentioned the prices creeping up, especially at festivals, which might make you think twice about splashing out for a round. Then there's the odd service hiccup, like when taps are out or you end up overcharged, which can be a bit frustrating on what should be a carefree visit. Overall, it's a solid choice for us pub goers looking for something a tad special, but I'd say go in with your eyes open – pick a quiet day if you can, and you'll likely have a cracking time. It's all about balance, isn't it? The high marks from the crowd show it's doing plenty right, but keeping an eye on those little niggles will help you make the most of it.

Bowness Bay Brewery have created a classic ale in Swan Blonde which never disappoints. It was a pleasure to have a pint at the brewery which coincided with the Easter Beer Fest.
The place itself is well set up, two bars in different buildings. Lots of seating areas inside and out.
Was quite expensive on the day. Didn't realise it was the beer festival when we went. For 5 pints it was £39.00 and with it you had to buy a glass which wasn't refundable. So yes, the round would've been £29.00 on probably a normal day but still it was the most expensive round of the 6 place we visited..
Bad customer service. Ordered 3 different drinks on tap each one was out. Then over charged for the ones we were finally able to get
Fantastic experience! The brewery tour was excellent. Rick was knowledgeable, captivating and a pleasure to drink with. We had plenty of tasters throughout the brewing process, and even more in the bar.
Kendal Weekend - Feb '24 - not many places get 5 stars! Dog friendly. Great service. Lovely little wooden huts outside (where I sat) and fantastic craft ale. I had the Fell Walker Pale Ale 4%. There was a live band on inside which would have been too loud for Archie, so the huts were perfect. Soundproofing was great and just the right noise level to enjoy what was inside. Top Notch! 2nd night on our Ale trail we had the Fell Walker Pale Ale 4% again and the Swift Best Bitter 3.8%.
