About This Pub
Ah, 98 Highgate in Kendal – what a gem it is for anyone looking for a proper pub experience in the Lake District. From what I've gathered from the reviews, it's got this lovely, lively atmosphere that's just right for unwinding, whether you're tucking into their incredible tapas selection or sipping on one of their many drink options, including some great non-alcoholic choices. The staff really shine through; they're so friendly and attentive, making sure everything from a quick drink to a big event like a wedding runs like clockwork. It's clear folks love the food – think vegan-friendly dishes that are bursting with flavour – and that outdoor seating area adds a nice touch for when the weather's on your side. On the flip side, it's only open six days a week, so you might have to plan around that, and it can feel a bit quieter with not as many reviews under its belt, which might not suit if you're after a packed house. Still, for a cosy night out or even combining it with a stay in their upstairs Airbnb, it's well worth a visit – I'd say give it a go if you're in the area, as it's got that perfect blend of charm and quality that makes you want to come back.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The food is absolutely top-notch – their tapas options are mouthwatering, with plenty of vegan-friendly choices that cater to all tastes, and I've heard the fried chicken and artichoke dishes are out of this world.
-
The staff are incredibly friendly and welcoming; they go the extra mile, like offering a free coffee or ensuring everything runs smoothly for events, which makes you feel right at home.
-
It's a brilliant spot for special occasions, like weddings or group gatherings, with a lively yet cosy atmosphere that keeps things fun without being overwhelming.
-
They've got a great selection of drinks, including non-alcoholic options, and that open seating area outside is perfect for enjoying a pint on a nice day in Kendal.
-
Plus, having an Airbnb upstairs is a handy bonus if you're planning a longer stay or a weekend away in the Lake District area.
Cons
-
It only opens six days a week, so if you're popping by on a Sunday, you might be out of luck, which could be a bit of a downer for spontaneous visits.
-
With just 39 reviews so far, it might not be as well-known, meaning it could feel a tad quiet at times, especially if you're after a buzzing crowd every night.
-
The location in Kendal is lovely, but it's a bit out of the way for those not already in the area, so getting there might take some effort if you're not local.

We hired out 98 Highgate over the May bank holiday weekend for our wedding reception. Absolutely fantastic, Cameron and his team were amazing. Communication was great, food was out of this world, and we couldn’t have asked for more. Would 100% recommend to anyone looking for a venue in the Lake District. Thanks again!
Lively and charming tapas bad. Plenty of tapas options. And it's Vegan friendly.
Artichoke tapas was literally mouthwatering. Fried chicken was out of this world.
There are many drinks options. + 0 alcoholic beers. Always lively atmosphere. Not to forget the open sitting area in the rare.
This was my second visit for a reason. By the way, Churros weren't that great, better avoid.
Cheers.
Very charming and best friendly customer service. I turned up with a group the lady walk to coach and offered me a free Kendal coffee ☕️ 😋 . Everyone around are so kind and welcoming. I highly recommend them plus they have Airbnb upstairs you anyone is planning long stay.
Originally planned to go to comida next door but they were full and informed us 98 highgate was also owned by them. Much more quiter and cosy in here, food was great, staff were really friendly amd everythung arrived pretty quickly
Excellent food, great staff, and a lovely atmosphere. We got 8 different tapas between 4 adults and it was a perfect amount (with room left to try some churros for dessert!). Would definitely recommend
