About This Pub
Ah, The Red Lion in Hockley is one of those pubs that really captures the heart of British tradition – it's a Joules gem with a welcoming feel that's just spot on for a relaxed get-together. From the reviews, the Sunday roasts stand out as something special; folks rave about the tasty meats, fresh seasonal veg, and hearty portions that leave you satisfied, plus they've got a solid lineup of craft beers to wash it all down. The team there are absolute stars, full of banter and happy to accommodate things like dietary requirements or even letting you have a go at pulling your own drink, which adds a fun, personal touch. It's brilliant for family meals or celebrating with friends, as the atmosphere is cosy and unpretentious. On the flip side, though, prices have jumped up quite a bit lately, making it feel a smidge expensive for what you get – some have mentioned bills creeping towards £70 for two, which might make you think twice if you're after something more affordable. Overall, it's a solid choice if you're up for treating yourself to quality grub and good vibes, but keep an eye on the wallet for the full experience.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The Sunday roasts are an absolute delight – packed with flavour, generous portions, and a real homely touch that makes you feel right at ease.
-
The staff are so welcoming and friendly; they're always up for a chat and go out of their way to make sure everyone feels looked after, even sorting out dietary needs without a fuss.
-
It's got that classic British pub vibe down pat, with a great selection of craft beers and a cosy atmosphere perfect for unwinding with mates or family.
-
Booking is straightforward and reliable, making it easy to plan a visit, and they've got little extras like letting you pull your own pint for a fun twist.
Cons
-
Prices have skyrocketed a bit, so meals can end up costing more than you'd expect – like nearly £70 for two with just a juice and a half pint, which might put some off.
-
It could feel a tad pricey for regular visits, especially if you're watching the pennies, as the value doesn't quite match up with the higher costs these days.

Thank you Reagan for an excellent Sunday roast. We had a wonderful time talking to you during supper. And, letting me pull my own beer was an exceptional experience.
Cannot rate this place highly enough.
Booked for a Sunday Lunch for 7 for a milestone birthday (Happy 80th birthday Ma). Booking straight-forward and confirmed dietary requirements for one (coeliac) of the party. Staff were very friendly and welcoming and good for a bit of banter.
One guest had the roast rolled shoulder of lamb which was described as phenomenally good. Two had the roast beef - both were very happy with their decision and extremely satisfied. There was a vegan sausage roast which got demolished. The birthday girl was more than satisfied with a kids roast chicken dinner (which would probably satisfy many adults). Yours truly doubled up with roast chicken and pork. The chicken was ridiculously good, some crispy skin and beautifully succulent. The pork was sensational with the most amazing crackling.
Nobody in the party was interested in desserts as the dinners were so, so good and filling.
The roast dinners were unbelievably good value for money. The veg was spot on and there was more than enough served up.
Will I book again? Absolutely if it fits in with plans.
Would I recommend? Abso-bloody-lutely.
As we went on a Sunday there was plenty of free on-street parking nearby.
Good work The Red Lion - from one very satisfied punter and his family.
Their Sunday roast food is top tier 👌 only downside is that the price is just rocket up too high! It used to be our Sunday choice place to go, but we now think it's time to change since last time. Our bill for two was almost £70 with a juice and half pint.
Fab Sunday roast, my dad loves coming with us here for a drink and a meal. We booked ahead and had roughly an hour slot for the table, with the option to finish drinks downstairs which worked well for us. Food was brilliant, great mix of seasonal veg, all the meat (between us we had the lamb, beef and pork) was beautifully cooked and importantly, the Yorkshire puds were fab.
Great meal…. Not the cheapest but definitely amazing quality. The old adage of get what you pay for 😍 lovely staff and the owner gave us a mini tour and made us all very welcome. Had the Sunday roast (takeaway containers available as they offer a healthy and tasty portion) will definitely be returning !
