About This Pub
Ah, The Red Lion in Kilsby – it's one of those pubs that just feels like a proper local gem, you know? From what I've gathered from folks who've been there, the food really steals the show; think seasonal menus packed with locally sourced goodies, dishing up everything from superb garlic mushrooms and beef wellington to tasty curries and Sunday roasts that offer brilliant value. It's family-run with a traditional yet modern vibe, and that beer garden is an absolute treat on a sunny day, complete with heaters for when the weather turns. Plus, it's easy to strike up a chat with the regulars, giving it that homely, welcoming touch that makes you want to linger. On the downside, a few mates mentioned the service can drag a bit, leading to waits that might frustrate you, especially if you're in for a quick bite. And don't forget, it's closed for food on Mondays, so plan ahead if you're popping by mid-week. All in all, it's a solid choice for a relaxed meal and a pint, with plenty of positives that outweigh the niggles, but it's worth going in with realistic expectations for a balanced experience.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The food is absolutely top-notch, with fresh, locally sourced ingredients and a brilliant mix of modern British dishes inspired by France, Italy, Spain, and India – plus those classic pub favourites like sausage and mash that never disappoint.
-
It's got a lovely, welcoming atmosphere in the heart of a quaint village, with a spacious beer garden that's perfect for soaking up the sun, and even a secure play area for the little ones to enjoy.
-
The community feel is spot on; you'll often bump into friendly locals, and there's a great selection of real ales, guest brews, wines, and gins to please everyone, all at reasonable prices with perks like discounts for over 65s on weekday lunches.
Cons
-
Service can be a tad slow at times, which might leave you waiting a bit longer than you'd like for your meal or drinks.
-
The kitchen is closed on Mondays, so if you're planning a mid-week visit, you'll have to settle for just drinks or pop in on another day.
-
There have been occasional hiccups with table management, like being asked to move outside unexpectedly, which could disrupt a relaxed outing.

Stopped for food and a drink, met some local legends- including Michael and the Women’s Institute Skittles players! Feeling super fortunate to have stumbled upon this community that welcomed a couple of off the beaten path American travelers. The food was amazing but the chats with those holding the bar down ran from experiences serving on the queen mary during wwii to racing motorcycles and unearthing king Richard III. Ladies the handsome old gits will gladly kiss you on the cheek! We’ll be back!
The food was pretty good, however we exoerienced very slow service, and we were asked to vacate our table and eat dessert outside on a windy day when the delays were caused by the food taking such a long time.
Been here a few times in the last few weeks and in this time I've had fish & chips, a roast and a chicken burger. All of those dishes were very nice but the true standout is the garlic mushroom starter. Something about it is just spectacular...
Prices on food and drink are all very reasonable. We took advantage of the £20 for three courses (including Sunday roast) on a Sunday and I think that is great value. Beer garden is nice too.
We booked the Red Lion for Sunday lunch on Mother’s Day, and the pub was nice and busy with a good vibe.
I opted for the 3 course Sunday lunch for £20, which was a great value option.
I think the starter (cauliflower) and desert (bread and butter pudding) were the highlights.
The roast beef was decent, and I polished it all off with no real complaints.
You’ll find better roasts for sure, but you’ll also find much worse!
4 stars is a great score - and well worth each one of those stars!
Beef wellington, tried for the first time. Superb plate of food. My wife had chicken masala and thought it was the best she's had. Well done 👏 certainly be visiting again.
