About This Pub

Ah, The Railway Tavern – it's one of those pubs that just feels like a proper local gem in Chelmsford, especially if you're stepping off the train and fancy a quick stop. I have to say, the staff are an absolute highlight; they're so helpful and chatty, it makes the whole experience that much more enjoyable, like catching up with old mates behind the bar. The beer and gin choices are brilliant too – plenty to choose from, and it's all served just right. Then there's the fun decor, with those railway carriage vibes in the lounge areas, and the outdoor space is lovely on a nice day, all flowery and relaxed. It's got this welcoming community atmosphere that makes you want to linger. On the flip side, though, it's a shame about the odd beer being out of stock temporarily, like no stouts when you fancy one, and without WiFi, it's not ideal if you're needing to stay connected. That sign about the toilets only for customers feels a tad unwelcoming, and from what I've heard, the food's okay but not standout – think simple buffet-style bits that do the job but won't blow you away. Overall, it's a solid spot for a pint and a natter, but worth keeping those little downsides in mind if you're planning a visit.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The bar staff are incredibly friendly and helpful, which really makes you feel welcome right from the off.
  • They've got a cracking selection of beers and gins, perfect for settling in with a pint or a G&T after a long day.
  • The pub's decor is spot on, with lounge areas styled like old railway carriages – it's a fun nod to its name and adds a bit of character.
  • There's a lovely outdoor area that's great for a sunny afternoon, with flowers and a relaxed vibe.
  • It has that warm community feel, making it a welcoming spot to pop in for a chat or meet mates.
Cons
  • Some beers like stouts or porters might be temporarily out, which could disappoint if that's your go-to.
  • No WiFi on offer, so it's not the best if you're looking to check your phone or work remotely.
  • There's a sign saying toilets are only for customers, which feels a bit off-putting and stopped one reviewer from giving full marks.
  • Food options seem a bit hit or miss – like the buffet-style sandwiches mentioned, which were alright but nothing to write home about.

Pub within spitting distance of Chelmsford rail station, a wide selection of ales at both ends of the bar, the lounge areas are decorated loosely in the style of old railway carriages, with historic insignia. There is a pleasant outside area, running the length of the pub buildings.

Friendly pub, clean and had a community feel to it. No stouts or porters at the moment, but that's just a temporary thing the staff member said, but there was a decent mild. Comfortable and welcoming, would recommend.

Great selection of ales served at the proper temperature near the train and bus station. Paved beer garden with flowers and a good atmosphere. Lovely on a sunny day! No wifi and a curt sign on the door about using the toilets only if you're a customer prevents a 5 star
