About This Pub

Ah, The Ale House – it's one of those places that really hits the mark for anyone who's mad about their brews. From what I've gathered from the chats online, it's got this fantastic array of craft beers and ciders that keeps things exciting, with something new to try every time you swing by. The setting in those old railway arches adds a lovely touch of character, making it feel like a proper hideaway without being too stuffy. Service-wise, folks seem chuffed with how helpful the staff are, and it's conveniently placed near the station, which is brilliant if you're just passing through. On the flip side, it does have its quieter moments, which could be a plus if you're after a peaceful pint, but might leave you wanting more buzz if you're in the mood for a lively night out. Oh, and while the drinks steal the show, there isn't much buzz about grub, so you might want to grab a bite elsewhere first. All in all, it's a solid choice for a relaxed evening with friends, and I'd say it's well worth a visit if you're in Chelmsford and fancy something a bit special.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The beer selection is absolutely brilliant – it's like a craft ale festival in one spot, with a huge variety of ales, ciders, and even non-alcoholic options for those driving.
  • The atmosphere is spot on; it's set in charming railway arches, making it feel unique and cosy, perfect for a relaxed catch-up with mates.
  • Location's a winner – right next to the train station, so it's dead easy to pop in for a quick pint before heading off.
  • Service is friendly and efficient, with drinks details up on screens and at the bar, which makes choosing a breeze.
Cons
  • It can be surprisingly quiet at times, even on a Friday night, which might not suit if you're after a buzzing, lively crowd.
  • Not much chat about food options; a couple of folks mentioned skipping it altogether, so it might not be the place for a full meal.
  • The website seems a bit unreliable – had some issues accessing it, which could make planning a visit a tad frustrating.

Perfect for the ale and cider geek. Like a Beer festival for choice. Didn't have food. Drank lager. Great setting, but oddly quiet for a Friday night, which was a blessing as 5 of us got a table.. ! A goto place in Chelmsford, up there with Yates in the 90's!

Great choice of beers, great atmosphere. Have been here a few times and always different beers available. Would definitely recommend. They have beers and prices on a TV screen and details also available at the bar. They have cider also plus non alcoholic beer if you happen to be driving.. some outdoor seating during the summer months.

Beautiful place, occupying a couple of railway arches, a minutes walk from the station. Specialising in craft ales. Their is also a good selection of cask ales. The walls are decorated with old pump clips, and craft cans. A small outside area is available out the back.
