About This Pub

Ah, The Royal Steamer, what a lovely spot it is down in Chelmsford. I've got to say, it's one of those pubs that just makes you want to settle in for the evening with a good beer in hand. The staff are absolute stars, always greeting you with a warm smile and making sure everything's just right – it's that kind of place where you end up chatting away like old mates. They've got a solid lineup of drinks, from classic Guinness and Madri to some standout Sharps ales and ciders that really hit the mark, and if you're into your sports, the big screens are a treat for watching the matches. Plus, with live music nights and its handy location near the stations, it's spot on for a quick drink or a full night out. On the flip side, I've heard a couple of grumbles about the odd pint not being quite up to scratch, and it seems the ale selection isn't as varied as it used to be, which is a shame. Prices might nudge a bit high for some, but overall, it's a smashing boozer that's worth a visit if you're in the area – just go in with an open mind and you'll likely have a grand time.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The staff are incredibly friendly and welcoming, always ready with a smile and a chat, making you feel right at home.
  • They've got a cracking selection of beers on tap, including favourites like Guinness, Madri, and some top-notch Sharps ales and ciders that hit the spot.
  • It's a brilliant place for catching the big games with three large screens, perfect for a bit of sport with your pint.
  • Live music events add a lively buzz, and it's just a stone's throw from the bus and train stations, ideal for a quick stop-off.
  • The overall atmosphere is warm and traditional, with a pub dog wandering about that gives it that extra homely feel.
Cons
  • A few folks have mentioned that some of the beers can be off occasionally, which is a bit disappointing when you're after a perfect pint.
  • The range of ales seems to have shrunk a tad compared to before, so it might not have as much variety as it once did.
  • Prices can feel a smidge pricey, especially if you're planning on a few rounds, though it's still reasonable for what you get.

I've walked by this pub many times, but after a horrendous journey from London, I decided I needed a pint. What a delightful surprise! A nice pint of Pravha and a lovely smile from the landlady! This is going to be my new regular watering hole when I'm in town. Smashing boozer.

Good old fashioned pub behind the railway station. Irish connections and local clientele. Three big screens for watching sport three hand pulled ales, Guinness and Madri on draught and an interesting Sharps cider. Friendly place with a pub dog too!

Change of landlord since I was last in (10 years ago!) the ale range is now smaller and the old pharmaceutical curios have been replaced now towards a more sports theme. Ales were still good, 3 on all Sharpe's but including sharps fury which is a rare find on cask. Also sold sharps cider which is very decent.

Decent local boozer. They have some decent beer options on tap. Prices are decent. They do a lot of live music, bar staff are friendly and welcoming. It's only a few minutes from the bus and train station.

Nice venue. Not been here for quite a while (at least two years). Used to be very respectable back street local serving good quality real ale. Tried two pints of real ale tonight (okay price at £4.60 but still a tad pricey) but both were "off". First was pea soup cloudy. Second beer from different brewery was cloudy and had an unpleasant twang. Saving grace was barman changed both pints for a lager. Guessing this is no longer a real ale destination pub as would expect knowledgeable staff not to serve such obviously inferior pints. Doom Bar (!) seems to be the drinkable ale for those not drinking lager or Guinness. Sadly disappointing.
