About This Pub

Ah, The Punter – what a lovely spot it is, tucked away by the river in Oxford. I've got to say, it's one of those places that really hits the mark for a laid-back meal; the veggie and vegan dishes are just brilliant, with everything from mushroom gnocchi to cauliflower steak coming out fresh and packed with taste, as if they've put real thought into making meat-free options exciting. The location's a real winner too, especially after a wander along the Thames – picture yourself in that garden lit up with fairy lights on a summer evening, or snug inside with a pint of local beer. The team there are so approachable and make sure everything runs smoothly, which adds to the homely feel. On the flip side, it's not smack in the middle of town, so you might need to plan a bit if you're not up for the walk, and if meat's your thing, well, you might miss having those options on the menu. All in all, it's a cracking choice for a chilled-out get-together, and I'd definitely recommend giving it a go if you're after something a bit different from the usual pub grub.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The food is absolutely spot-on, with a fantastic selection of vegetarian and vegan dishes that are creative, hearty, and full of flavour – perfect for anyone looking for delicious meat-free options.
  • It's got a lovely, relaxed riverside setting just outside Oxford's city centre, making it ideal for a peaceful escape, whether you're enjoying an outdoor lunch or a cosy evening with local beers and cocktails.
  • The staff are incredibly friendly and efficient, always ready with a smile and quick service that makes you feel right at home.
  • The atmosphere is charming and full of character, with unique artwork, fairy lights in the garden, and that classic pub vibe that just draws you in.
Cons
  • It's a short walk from the city centre, which might not suit everyone if you're after something more central and could mean it's a bit of a trek in bad weather.
  • The menu focuses entirely on vegetarian and vegan fare, so if you're craving a meaty option, you might find the choices a tad limited.

What a joy to find a pub in Oxford, that serves only vegan and vegetarian food – and it’s all well thought out and absolutely delicious! I had the mushroom gnocchi, which was hearty and delightful. The gnocchi were perfect little fluffy dumplings that melted in my mouth. My dining partner opted for the mushroom and lentil burger and couldn’t stop talking about how good it was. Thank you for such a wonderful dining experience! We’ll definitely be back soon!

How lovely to have this wonderful veggie / vegan pub at the end of a long walk along the Thames. Delicious food and tasty beer on tap. Fast and friendly service and peaceful river views. Highly recommend the cauliflower steak with it's amazing caper sauce.

Veggie, vegan needn't be the determining factor here - this is just great food in a pleasant location a short pleasurable walk from the city centre alongside a narrow boat section of the Thames. We called on spec late on a Bank Holiday afternoon unsure if they would be serving but glad to say they were. Service was extremely efficient and professional, sat outside in the small courtyard and was served entirely at table. We shared a selection of food from the appetiser, small plates and main sections - all were tasty, fresh and interesting. I'm a meat eater and not once did I feel I was missing out on anything. Looking forward to a return to try more of their dishes.

Wonderful old building with lots of framed artwork. Very cordial staff. Seating indoors or out. The food was amazing; everything on the menu is at least vegetarian, and most are fully vegan. The majority of those that aren't vegan by default can be ordered that way. We really enjoyed everything we tried. It's not an inexpensive place to eat, but I think you'll agree that it's worth the price.

Came here for dinner and it was absolutely great. It had a lovely "old pub" atmosphere and the location is great being just by the river. The staff were all very friendly and service was brilliant. The food was absolutely excellent! The menu has a great selection and I really would love to come back to try the other dishes! Even the non-veggie was waxing lyrical about how good the scotch egg was. I think he could have taken a doggy bag home with about 5 more in!
