About This Pub
You know, when you step into The Old Bookbinders Ale House, it's like slipping back in time to a proper old-school pub that's been a Jericho secret since 1869. The place has this brilliant mix of historic charm and a relaxed vibe, where you can enjoy top-notch real ales and some cracking French-inspired dishes that folks can't stop raving about. From what I've gathered from the reviews, the food's always spot on – think delicious tarts and sea bass that leave you wanting more – and the service is just lovely, with staff who make you feel right at home, whether you're popping in with the family or your furry mate. They've got fun events like quizzes and open mics that really bring the community together, adding to that lively atmosphere. On the flip side, it's no secret that it gets packed, so you might find yourself waiting for a table or needing to email in advance, which can be a bit of a faff. And with a smaller menu, it's not the place for endless options, but honestly, what they do offer is worth it. Overall, it's a solid spot for a great night out – just go in with realistic expectations, and you'll have a whale of a time.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The atmosphere is absolutely charming and full of character, making it feel like a cosy hideaway in the heart of Oxford.
-
They've got a fantastic selection of real ales and delicious French Bistro-inspired food that's consistently high quality.
-
The service is warm and friendly, with a team that's welcoming to everyone, including families and dogs, creating a real community vibe.
-
Regular events like quizzes and open mics keep things lively and give it that extra buzz we all love in a good pub.
Cons
-
It can get pretty busy, making it a challenge to snag a table without booking ahead, which might put a dampener on spontaneous visits.
-
The menu is smaller than some other spots, so choices are limited, though they focus on quality over quantity.
-
The phones aren't always answered during peak hours, so you'll need to email for reservations, which isn't ideal if you're in a rush.

A lot was on going and it seemed as if I had stepped in at the wrong moment. The bar was alight, the ales flowing, the desserts unmissable.and the service was with a smile. Sometimes being alone in a crowd can be just feeling lost.
Feast on the Ales, shun the beer, cider is for the sides, food is amazing. Atmosphere bursting with energy.
You need to be in there to feel it
Very atmospheric and dynamic pub!
I've been a few times for drinks, but had food for the first time back in April. We went for a pre-dinner drink and enquired if there were any tables after looking at the menu. To our delight, they managed to fit us in at very short-notice. Service was great and we were made very welcome.
We enjoyed French Specialty Wine with a shared starter of 'Rillette de la Mer,' followed by 'Le Marée Provençale' and 'L' Anti Cannibale.' All portions were delicious and we were able to take the remainder home. A great evening on a bustling Saturday night.
The food and service were just fantastic. The food was delicious. The servers were lovely and friendly. The restaurant itself inside is amazing. I highly recommend it and would 100% love to eat here again.
Excellent throughout! We’ve been visiting this place for the last 10 years and the quality of food has been consistently high. Lovely atmosphere and friendly service as well. Be prepared to wait a bit for a table but the wait will be worth it!
Excellent place for dinner (although getting a table is definitely the tricky part here).
We had the 2 course set menu (£20.50 each). I had a delicious goat cheese and med veg tart to start followed by sea bass. Whilst the other person had same starter but the French style burger (no bun).
The service was friendly and efficient and they answered all my allergen questions having checked with the kitchen without making me feel like I was difficult!
Good drinks selection.
Overall a great little find.
