About This Pub

Ah, the Prince of Wales in Forest Hill – it's one of those pubs that just feels like a proper community spot, you know? From the reviews I've had a look at, folks are really chuffed with its historical roots going back to 1847, and the way the staff go out of their way to make you feel welcome. I love how it's got that quiet, friendly atmosphere where you can pop in for a pint of Amstel at a fair price and not feel overwhelmed. The beer garden stands out as a real highlight, especially on a nice day – it's just the ticket for a relaxed afternoon. And if you're into sports, the big screens are a nice touch for catching the game. On the flip side, it's not all perfect; a couple of people have shared that the food can be hit or miss, with complaints about it being cold or a bit pricey, and it sounds like they might not have the fullest menu just yet. Still, with an overall rating of 4.2, it's clear this place has a lot going for it, especially if you're after good drinks and a chat rather than a full dining experience. All in all, I'd say it's worth a visit if you're in the area – just keep your expectations in check for the grub and you'll likely have a cracking time.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • It's got a real historical charm, dating back to 1847, which makes you feel like you're stepping into a piece of London history.
  • The staff and management are incredibly friendly and welcoming, always up for a chat and making you feel right at home.
  • The beer garden is an absolute gem, perfect for soaking up the sun with a pint – it's one of those spots that just lifts your spirits.
  • It's a quiet and relaxed place, ideal for catching up with mates without the hustle and bustle of busier pubs.
  • With inexpensive prices, you can enjoy a good drink without worrying about the wallet, and they've got big screens for watching the match.
Cons
  • Some have mentioned the food can be a bit disappointing, like it arriving cold or feeling overpriced for what you get.
  • It was closed for a while and might still be getting back on track, so things could feel a tad inconsistent at times.
  • The menu options seem limited based on a few comments, so it might not be the best choice if you're after a proper meal out.

🚇 Forest Hill 🍺 £5.40 Amstel The Prince of Wales is located at the southern end of Forest Hill in southeast London. The nearest station is Forest Hill on the Windrush Line. This pub has a history dating back to 1847 and was once owned by Charrington’s Brewery. It was remodelled in the 1930s in a Mock Tudor style, which was popular at the time. This is a traditionally decorated, one-bar pub with a centrally located servery. To the left of the servery is a long, narrow bar area with a dartboard and fireplace. To the right is a carpeted area, which is a little more spacious and features some banquette seating and a large TV. To the side of the pub is a patio beer garden, perfect if you fancy imbibing al fresco. The beer lineup is all keg and offers a selection of well-known brands. I opted for an Amstel; my pint hit the spot, price was reasonable at just over a fiver. The pub wasn’t serving food when we visited, but it has done so in the past. We arrived just before 3 p.m. on a warm and sunny Saturday afternoon in May. The pub was empty at first, but we were soon joined by a couple of regulars. The service was great — we were served by the landlady, who was holding the fort as the pub is closing soon for a six-week refurbishment, which was encouraging to hear. My brother and I pulled up a couple of stools at the bar to enjoy our pints. We enjoyed our visit to The Prince of Wales and were buoyed to hear that @starspubscompany (Heineken) is investing in the pub’s future and giving it a new lease on life. I shall return. 📅 10th May 2025 If you want to see all my pub reviews in one place, head to @londonpubmap on Instagram. 🍻

This is a great little local pub that has been taken over by completely new management. The pub is open in the evenings only at the moment as it trays to get going again after being shut for ages. The owner and bar staff are very friendly and I will be making this my local. They have 2 big screens showing sports and an outside seating area that'll be great when the warmer weather comes!

I agree with the comments here. The food is expensive and we weren’t 100% impressed. All of our food was cold, we returned our sons meals to have it warmed up. Maybe a children’s meal which includes a drink and desert rather than price everything separately would also be good. Saying that the food was tasty, but paying the amount they charge you expect it to be spot on. Aside from that good service, friendly staff. Easy to order via online menu. Good selection of drinks. The outdoor area is impressive. I just feel they need to up their efforts on the food to justify the prices.
