About This Pub

Ah, The Alfred, it's one of those pubs that just feels like a reliable old mate in Sydenham. From what I've gathered from the reviews and details, it's got this charming, unpretentious vibe where you can pop in for a pint and end up staying for the evening. The Guinness is a real standout – folks are raving about it being the best around, even better than some well-known spots, which is high praise indeed if you're a fan like me. Pair that with a solid lineup of drinks, from craft ales to wines and spirits, and you've got options galore. The entertainment side is brilliant too; whether it's watching the footie, joining in on karaoke, or having a go at pool and darts, there's always something to get involved in. The owner seems like a absolute gem, making everyone feel welcome and even dishing out homemade treats like chilli – that personal touch really adds to the atmosphere. On the flip side, it's not without its rough edges; a few people have noted that the inside could use a freshen-up, as it might look a bit dated or in need of a clean. Still, if you're after a relaxed, down-to-earth spot rather than something flashy, it's worth overlooking that for the good times on offer. All in all, I'd say it's a solid choice for a night out – head down early, grab a seat, and soak in the local charm, but maybe keep expectations realistic if you're picky about decor.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The Guinness here is absolutely top-notch, often hailed as the best in South London – perfect for those who appreciate a well-poured pint.
  • It's a welcoming spot with a friendly owner and staff who make you feel right at home, especially if you're up for a chat or trying the homemade chilli.
  • They've got a great vibe for sports fans, showing all the big games from Sky and BT Sports, plus plenty of entertainment like karaoke nights, pool, and darts to keep things lively.
  • Spacious inside with some outside space too, making it ideal for relaxing with a drink, whether you're catching up with mates or enjoying the atmosphere alone.
  • A wide selection of beers, lagers, wines, and spirits means there's something for everyone, with seasonal specials that add a nice touch of variety.
Cons
  • It could do with a bit of a tidy-up inside; some folks have mentioned it feels a tad worn, which might put off those looking for a more polished setting.
  • The overall experience can be a bit hit or miss at times, with a few comments suggesting that while the drinks are great, the pub's upkeep isn't always up to scratch.
  • Based on what I've seen, it's not the most modern spot, so if you're after something trendy or fancy, you might find it a bit old-school.

Moved away from Sydenham 10 years ago, went back there acouple of Sundays ago. The Alfred hasn't really changed in that time, it has had a lick of paint and clean up (although it was a nice pub beforehand). Spacious, got the TV Sports.......

The Afred is by far the best pub in Sydenham, I put it down to two basic things that all pubs should have but rarely deliver on. 1: The Pints. The Guinness is exceptional, better than the Blythe hill tavern, best in South London for that matter. (For context I'm an Irishman I travel far and wide for a good Guinness, the first thing i do when i go back to Ireland is order a Guinness at my favourite pub, yes thats before i get to my maa's house). The dome is perfectly formed and shticks to the glass all the way down. The Madri and Moretti is banging too, always lively and crisp. A healthy variety of Tayto crisps too. 2: The Craic. The staff are some craic, Pauli and Nikki really add some great banter, fun and craic into to place, always good for a chat and both pour a crackin pint.

We love The Alfred. Best Guinness in the area (if not London). The Guinness even better than the Blythe Hill Tavern. I'm from a brewery town in the north and partner is from Northern Ireland and we have found in general that South London is a bit hit and miss for pubs. Either there is little atmosphere or really awful pints. We love the Alfred because it has both. It feels like a proper local pub like we have back home. The locals, the regulars, plenty of chat and banter, lively friendly bar staff, and what seems to missing from so many London pubs, staff that care about the drinks they serve. Would highly recommend a trip to the Alfred to anyone.

We were lucky enough to have this nice pub near our Airbnb. Paulie (the owner) is a really cool chap that will definitely brighten up your mood. If you're ever near Sydenham, it's absolutely worth a visit. If you're lucky enough you'll be able to try Paulie's chili.
