About This Pub

Ah, The Portland – it's one of those places that just feels like a proper local gem in Ashington, blending a cosy bar, tasty kitchen, and hotel all in one. From what I've gathered from the buzz around it, the food really steals the show; folks rave about the fresh, home-cooked British dishes with massive portions that could feed a small army, and there's something for everyone, including the little ones. The rooms sound brilliant too, all modern and luxurious with everything you need for a comfortable overnight, and the staff go out of their way to make you feel welcome, which is always a plus when you're out and about. On the flip side, though, the Wi-Fi can play up a bit, especially in the evenings, so if you're relying on it for anything important, you might want to keep that in mind. Also, without clear opening times, it's worth double-checking before you head over. All in all, it's a solid choice for a pint, a meal, or even a short break – I'd say give it a go if you're in the area, as the positives far outweigh the niggles, and it's got that warm, homely feel that makes for a great night out.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The food is absolutely spot on – think delicious British cuisine with huge portions that leave you feeling well satisfied, and they've got options for the whole family including a kids' menu.
  • The rooms are a real treat; spacious, modern, and comfy with smart TVs, Wi-Fi, and all the luxuries you'd want for a good night's sleep.
  • Staff are friendly and attentive, making you feel right at home from the moment you walk in, whether you're there for a meal or a stay.
  • They've got a handy app for ordering food and drinks without queuing, plus perks like discounts on rooms and easy booking.
  • Plenty of parking available, and it's been a welcoming spot in Ashington since 1890, with a great selection of drinks and wines from around the world.
Cons
  • Wi-Fi can be a bit unreliable at times, dropping out in the evenings which might frustrate you if you're trying to stream or work.
  • No specific operating hours listed, so you might need to check in advance to avoid any surprises, especially if you're planning a visit.
  • The overall price level isn't mentioned, which could mean it's a bit unpredictable – some might find it pricey depending on what you're after.

Fabulous hotel, fantastically spacious room. Food in the restaurant was delicious and they even provided a takeaway breakfast that included a lunch in the bag too. Highly, highly recommend

Didn't stay in the hotel. Visited for a meal. Menu was varied with something to suit most tastes. Portions were huge. Everyone in our party enjoyed their meal and couldn't finish what was on their plates. Quality was great and freshly made. Service good.

Great stay. Bar and food was the best I've experienced for a long time at a hotel in the area and beyond. Food was really nice and ate there mant times with my parents. Room was warm and comfortable. Hotel was a short walk to my parents home too. Wi fi was ok but dropped a lot during the evening unless I sat by the bedroom window. Bathroom could di with a toilet brush if anythig. Charges for parking should be scrapped looking at other comments they all agree too. 10 pound per night on top of an already medium/ high price of stay in this area was a bit dissapointing. Overall great stay. Car parking charges would make me look elsewhere though tbh. Great stay overall.

A short one night stay but a truly wonderful experience. From check-in to departure everything first class. Rooms are in a separate building to the rear of the pub. An absolutely beautiful room with lovely furnishings. Had one drink in the bar and young lad was very attentive. Well done all, would not hesitate to stay again.
