About This Pub
Ah, The Plough Inn – it's one of those places that just feels like a proper British pub, tucked away in the lovely village of Long Wittenham right by the Thames. From what I've gathered, it's got this inviting, family-friendly vibe that's hard to beat, with a cosy bar for those chilly evenings and a sprawling garden that's ideal for soaking up the sun with a cold one in hand. The food often steals the show, with plenty of rave reviews about delicious meals and attentive service that makes you feel right at home. But, let's be honest, it's not all roses; a few visitors have mentioned that the drinks menu could do with more variety, especially if you're keen on gins, and the prices might leave you wondering if it's a bit over the top for a casual bite. Still, for a relaxed day out or a special gathering, it's got that timeless appeal that makes it worth a visit – just keep those expectations in check for a balanced experience.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The historic charm of this 17th-century pub is absolutely delightful, especially with its cosy log fire in winter and that stunning riverside garden in summer.
-
The food gets high praise from most visitors – think hearty meals and top-notch options like French onion soup and burgers that really hit the spot.
-
It's a welcoming spot for families, with a children's play area that makes it easier for parents to relax and enjoy a meal or a drink.
-
Service is generally spot on, even when they're busy, with warm welcomes and quick delivery of food and drinks.
-
The location by the River Thames is just magical, perfect for al fresco dining, events, or simply unwinding with a pint.
Cons
-
Some folks have found the food a bit hit-or-miss, like the lunchtime offerings that didn't quite live up to expectations.
-
The drink selection can be a letdown, with a poor choice of gins and tonics, which might disappoint if you're after something specific.
-
Prices seem a tad steep for what you get – for instance, a simple lunch for two can add up quickly without feeling entirely worth it.
-
There have been niggles with the basics, such as condiments not being readily available or meals served without proper plates.

This was our first visit to The Plough, and we were very pleasantly surprised.
We had a very warm welcome from the staff, the atmosphere inside was lovely and the food was very good. Although there was a large booking which was keeping the staff busy, our food and drinks arrived really quickly.
A lovely impromptu lunch stop for us, but we will definitely be back.
Thank you so much for such a wonderful meal with such a friendly and inviting atmosphere. The children’s play park is a real hit meaning children can play while parents can eat which really helps when you have children who really are unable to sit in one place! The food was absolutely stunning and the service was so friendly and we felt welcome to be there and welcome to return. Definitely by far the best visit to a pub in the local area. We will be back!
Beautiful location, nice garden which goes down to river, mediocre lunchtime food, poor selection of gin, no decent tonic, just shy of £50 for two rounds of sarnies, two drinks, one portion of chips and some olives. Plates would have been nice. Cutlery, mayo sachets and other condiments sat outside in sunshine which is a bit gross on a hot day.

A good pub with excellent beer and food in a beautiful village. It is exceptional for its huge garden, running a long way down to the River Thames, with its own moorings.
Wow thank you Liam and the staff for a wonderful evening. The food was top quality. I had the french onion soup and the magnificent burger. The service was top drawer. I would thoroughly recommend the Plough for a great dining experience. Well done.
