About This Pub
Ah, The Plough – it's one of those pubs that really captures the essence of a traditional British spot, tucked away in Wolvercote with views over the green that make you want to linger for hours. From what I've gathered from the reviews and their website, the food is a standout; think fresh, locally sourced meals that cater to all sorts, whether you're after a summer special or a warming winter dish. It's got that perfect mix of cosy indoors and spacious outdoors, ideal for soaking up the sun with a glass of wine or a local ale, and they've got events like Easter Sunday or Bonfire Night that add a bit of excitement. The team seems genuinely welcoming for the most part, which makes it a great place for gatherings or even just a solo pint. On the flip side, though, there's that one barman – possibly the owner – who's been described as a bit of a grump, which could sour the experience if you're unlucky enough to cross paths. And with it getting so popular, you might have to book well in advance to avoid disappointment. All in all, it's a solid choice for a relaxed outing, as long as you go in with realistic expectations and a smile on your face!
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The food here is absolutely spot on – homemade dishes from locally sourced ingredients, with options for everyone, including veggies, vegans, and those with allergies.
-
It's got a cracking location right by the river and Port Meadow, perfect for enjoying a pint on the patio with stunning views, especially in the summer sunset.
-
The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, with a cosy yet spacious setup that's great for groups, couples, or even just popping in for a quiet drink.
-
They're super accommodating for events and functions, like birthdays or funerals, and they've got a variety of menus to suit different tastes and budgets.
-
Plenty of positive vibes from the staff overall, making it feel like a proper community hub with friendly service and a range of drinks, including local ales and low-alcohol options.
Cons
-
One of the staff members, who might be the owner, comes across as a bit miserable and lacking in people skills, which can put a dampener on things.
-
It gets booked up quickly, so you'll need to plan ahead if you want to grab a table, especially on busy days or for events.
-
While the food is generally excellent, some might find the specials change often, which could mean missing out on a favourite if you're not quick.

Really good food, great setting for a pub. All the staff are great apart from the barman not sure if he's the owner or not, but no management skills at all, miserable grumpy, easier to raise the titanic than a smile off him.

This is a really great pub. Had a great meal here on Saturday.
The pub is cosy and spacious at the same time. Lots of room for groups or parties whilst fine for couples or a drink by yourself. Quite a lot of space outside too.
The food was really good I had seabass with chips and veg. The fish was cooked beautifully and fell off the bone when I slid my knife through it. The chips were fluffy and the veg was again cooked really well (I don’t like a bite in my veg).
The staff were all super friendly and the place had a really good vibe. I would definitely go again. Great place.
We just had chips and cider because we were waiting for a grocery delivery for our narrowboat home moored nearby, but the chips were fine. Sat on the patio on a very pleasant night.
An absolutely unbelievable place in many respects. Situated just by the river, this totally wheelchair accessible pub and restaurant has a warm and welcoming landlord and staff, wonderful views, various cute and typically English places to sit and superb food. What else could one ask for? Yet there is more! The pub also boasts several outdoor seating areas both on the pub veranda and on the grass opposite. If you should so wish, you could start or end your day with a riverside walk though not everything locally is accessible. The pub itself though has one wheelchair parking space, a more than adequate disabled loo and accessible doors. Please see the wheelchair section for more details on access however.
For those who are neurodivergant, there are several spaces indoors where you can hide away and I have tried to show these in my photos.
Food: they really try hard here with a variety of dishes and two chefs. The menu is varied but not posh. Thankfully the prices modestly reflect the standard of cuisine. The atmosphere here is great and it makes a lovely summer day trip.
Quintessential English pub. Lovely location over looking Port Meadow perfect for an after lunch walk.
Traditional pub as you enter with two separate dining rooms at the side and rear. The menu is broad enough with veggie and vegan options. Good cask ales and a friendly service with many regulars being greeted by first name. Even the ‘tab’ (eat, drink and pay at the end) is still alive and kicking at this venue. Good value so worth a visit.
