About This Pub

Ah, The Overdraught, what a lovely find in St Albans! From what I've gathered from the buzz around it, this place really shines with its food – the Sunday roasts are hands down some of the best you'll get in Hertfordshire, with generous portions and flavours that hit the spot every time. I love how they keep things fresh with midweek specials and a good variety for vegetarians too; it's all about that proper home-cooked feel without the hefty price tag. The staff are just as charming, always up for a chat and throwing in those thoughtful extras like a free glass of bubbly on Mother's Day, which makes you feel appreciated. It's open seven days a week, which is brilliant for a spontaneous stop, and being dog-friendly adds to the homely vibe. On the flip side, it's so popular that you might struggle to get a table without booking ahead, and their online presence isn't quite up to scratch, so checking details could be a faff. All in all, though, it's a solid choice for a pint and a plate – I'd say give it a go if you're in the area, but maybe aim for a quieter weekday if you fancy a more laid-back visit.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The food is absolutely brilliant, especially the Sunday roasts which are packed with flavour and great value – perfect for a hearty meal without breaking the bank.
  • Friendly and welcoming staff who make you feel right at home, with little touches like complimentary Prosecco on special occasions that really add a nice surprise.
  • It's dog-friendly both inside and out, which is a real bonus if you're popping in with your furry friend for a relaxed afternoon.
  • A wide range of options on the menu, including tasty vegetarian choices like the nut roast, so there's something for everyone.
  • The pub has a lively local vibe and is open every day from midday, making it easy to drop in for a quick bite or a proper catch-up.
Cons
  • It gets booked up quickly, so you might need to plan ahead if you're keen on a Sunday roast – no spontaneous visits on busy days.
  • The website seems a bit glitchy, which could make it tricky to check menus or book online, so you might have to call or just turn up.
  • With its popularity, things can get quite full, especially on weekends, so it might not be the quietest spot if you're after a peaceful pint.

Amazing food which is really good value for money! Happy, friendly staff. The Sunday roast is the best one around but the midweek specials are also really good with a nice range of options.

The best place for a Sunday roast in Hertfordshire! The food is always top quality, with a great menu and new specials regularly added. We went for a Mother’s Day meal and were welcomed with complimentary Prosecco—a lovely touch. The trio roast was fantastic value, and despite the pub being fully booked, the service and food remained exceptional. Plus, the beer garden is a perfect spot to relax. Highly recommend!

Proper home cooking done perfectly. You need to book, this pub is booked up well in advance, and when tasted the Sunday roast you definitely get to find out why. I'd recommend the meat trio. Ample portions and yummy gravy. If you have room left the deserts look amazing. Really friendly local pub. Highly recommend giving this one a go.

I chose The Overdraught to meet a friend for lunch because of the close proximity to where I was staying, and what a great choice it turned out to be. Because of traffic chaos, my friend was a bit late arriving, so I had a coffee. It was beautifully presented in a double glass coffee mug, and had a little jug of heated milk. When it was time to order, we both chose the Beer Battered Fish with chips and tartare sauce. The batter was something to behold, so crisp and crunchy, and it was the best fish I have had for many years. The chips were cooked perfectly, and the home made tartare sauce was perfection. I noticed some of the meals other patrons had ordered, and they too looked and smelled delicious. What a great find. I shall return.

One of the best Sunday roasts I've had, and I've had a few. Friendly staff, and dog friendly (inside and outside). There's also a nut roast for vegetarians which is very tasty too.
