The Olde Kings Arms, 41 High St, Hemel Hempstead HP1 3AF

About This Pub

Ah, The Olde Kings Arms – it's one of those classic spots that really captures the heart of Hemel Hempstead, with its roots stretching back to the 1500s and a prime location on the High Street, just a stone's throw from parks and churches. I love how the staff go out of their way to make everyone feel welcome; they're proper friendly and add a warm touch to your visit, whether you're there for a quick pint or a full meal. The food often gets high marks for being hearty and delicious, with generous servings that leave you satisfied, and it's a plus that they accommodate pets so you can bring the whole family along. That said, it's not without its downsides – some folks have mentioned meals that weren't quite up to scratch, like undercooked bits, and service can be a tad slow, especially if you're waiting on breakfast. If you're eyeing the rooms for a stay, they might need a bit of love with uncomfortable beds and noise creeping in, so it might not be the best for a peaceful kip. All in all, it's a solid choice for a relaxed evening out, but I'd say go for the pub experience and maybe skip the overnight if you're after luxury – it's got that authentic pub charm that'll win you over, flaws and all.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The pub's got that wonderful historic charm, dating back to the 1500s and right on Hemel Hempstead's lovely High Street – it's a real treat to soak in the atmosphere.
  • Staff are absolutely brilliant and welcoming; they've got a knack for making you feel right at home, whether you're popping in for a drink or a meal.
  • The food is often spot on with generous portions and tasty options, like those wings that one reviewer couldn't get enough of – great value too.
  • It's pet-friendly, which is a lovely bonus if you're out with your dog; adds a nice community feel to the place.
Cons
  • Food quality can be hit or miss, with some reports of undercooked dishes like chips, which is a bit disappointing for a spot that prides itself on grub.
  • Service might drag on at times, especially for breakfast where waits can stretch out, even when it's not too busy.
  • If you're thinking of staying in the rooms, they could do with a refresh – worn-out mattresses and noise issues make for a less than restful night.

Great location for what we needed. 2 lads on the bar were brilliant. Smashed my way through 30 wings for 12 pound!! Few beers to go with. Good food and good atmosphere. Niceone

The kings arms is a lovely pub, the rather handsome landlord was very welcoming to us during our stay. We we're very impressed with the generous portions served by the kitchen and the food was delicious. The pub is pet friendly and we we're treated to meeting one of the regulars shaggy dog. Addressing the elephant in the room which is the age of the pub, for a building of it's antique nature the rooms we're freshly decorated with all the modern amenities. Would highly recommend the Olde Kings Arms to anyone wishing to stay or simply come for a pint.

Stayed here for a night. Room was pleasant and staff on the night shift were lovely and welcoming. Unfortunately let down by a need for a refresh, particularly the mattress in the room which was worn out and had no back support, and the need to add some sound proofing - could hear other guests’ conversations and using the toilet. Suggest improving the breakfast with decent coffee.

Writing this as soon as I returned home, as didn’t want to forget! Just had the most amazing Christmas dinner at the OKA. Staff as always brilliant, food was fabulous. Thank you to all that worked to make this such an enjoyable event, our first ever Christmas meal out, as family otherwise entertained, loved every moment. Well done Ben and your amazing team xxx
