About This Pub
Ah, the Old Bell – it's one of those pubs that just feels like a proper local gem in Hemel Hempstead. From what I've gathered from the buzz around it, the staff really shine; they're attentive, kind, and always up for a chat, which makes every visit feel warm and personal, like chatting with mates over a pint. The historic setting adds a nice touch, with its quaint interior and outdoor beer garden that's spot on for sunnier days or catching up on live sports like the Women's Euros – they've got it all sorted with Sky Sports and more. Prices are fair too, with some cheeky deals that keep things affordable without skimping on quality, and the food menu is reliable for a hearty meal that's more about good value than fancy dining. On the flip side, being a chain pub means it doesn't always stand out from the crowd – the grub's decent but not exactly groundbreaking, more focused on filling you up than wowing your taste buds. Plus, it can get a bit packed during events, and the weekday closing times might leave you wanting just one more round. All in all, it's a solid choice for a relaxed evening; I'd say pop in if you're after good company and a no-fuss vibe, but keep expectations realistic for a classic British pub experience.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The staff are incredibly friendly and go the extra mile to make you feel welcome, always attentive and ready with a smile.
-
It's got a lovely historic vibe in the heart of Hemel Hempstead, with a cosy interior and a beer garden that's perfect for a relaxed pint.
-
Prices are spot on – reasonable for drinks and food, with some cracking deals like the £3 ciders that make it great value for a night out.
-
They do a smashing job with events, like showing live sports including the Women's Euros and Lions tour, which adds to the lively atmosphere.
-
The menu offers a good selection of food that's reliably decent and hits the spot, especially for a quick meal before heading out.
Cons
-
As it's part of the Greene King chain, the food leans more towards solid, everyday options rather than anything truly standout or gourmet.
-
Opening hours might feel a bit limited in the evenings on weekdays, closing around 11pm, which could cut short a longer session.
-
It can get quite busy during events or peak times, so you might have to book ahead or wait for a table, which isn't ideal for spontaneous visits.

A massive thanks to Russ and the team for putting on a VE day special. You all went that extra mile to accommodate everyone. Like always- making sure you're customers are happy. Nothing ever a bother. Thank you so much.
Lovely old pub with a great vibe. Staff are friendly, drinks are reasonable with some good offers periodically. Great choice of food on the menu.
Recommend a visit to this pub with a fantastic history
Lovely little pub. We went in for an impromptu meal before going to the cinema at the Town Hall and were very impressed. Quaint place with a nice interior, friendly staff and excellent food.
Very reasonably priced menu and the food we had was really rather excellent for a high street pub.
The staff were very friendly, but also good at their job. When one drunk customer got rowdy and argumentative he was calmly removed by the lady behind the bar despite him being quite agressive towards her. Very impressive all round.
Next time we're in Hemel Old Town we'll definitely be looking to visit again.
Great staff, Kind, friendly and always attentive to customer needs. Amazing atmosphere couldn't fault the pub or the people. Went in last night for a cheeky drink and was served by Amy and Callum who were amazing also got speaking to the governor Russ and Anita who made our night unforgettable. Will definitely be returning. Thank you guys
Friendly staff in this charming pub in Hemel's Old Town.
The Greene King's menu is the same as any other in the chain with priority on value vs quality but it all served well and perfectly decent.
