About This Pub
Ah, The Olde Boars Head – it's one of those pubs that just draws you in with its warm, historic feel and that genuine northern hospitality. I've heard from mates that the staff go above and beyond to make everyone feel welcome, whether you're popping in for a quick pint or settling in for a proper meal. The food's generally a winner, with hearty options like burgers and those Sunday roasts that feel like a proper treat, especially with the new table service making things easier for families. But, fair's fair, it's not all roses; a few folks have had run-ins with the car park, like faulty machines leading to fines, which could sour an otherwise lovely visit. And while the grub is often spot on, there have been times when it's fallen a bit flat, with things like soft batter or chewy meat not quite hitting the mark. Overall, it's a solid spot for a relaxed catch-up, but I'd say keep an eye on those little niggles to make the most of it – after all, a good pub's about the memories you make, right?
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The staff are absolutely lovely – friendly, professional, and always ready with a warm welcome, making you feel right at home.
-
It's got that cosy, traditional pub vibe with plenty of history, like its late 16th-century roots and even a few ghostly tales to spice up the chat.
-
The food hits the spot most of the time; think tasty burgers, chunky chips, and hearty Sunday roasts that leave you nicely full without breaking the bank.
-
They've introduced table service, which is a real bonus for families or groups, saving you the faff of queuing at the bar.
Cons
-
Parking can be a right pain – the machine's been known to play up, leading to unexpected fines that put a dampener on the day.
-
The food isn't always spot on; some dishes might turn up a bit limp or chewy, which is a shame if you're expecting top-notch every time.
-
It's had a few off days with service or quality, so it might not live up to past visits, leaving you a tad disappointed.

Nice pub and food but the car reg machine wasn't working. Mentioned it to the staff who assured us that the parking company were aware of this . Received parking fine in post. All the pub had to say was appeal it. Fgs! I'd swerve this pub and car park now.
Wonderful staff, very friendly and professional. Cosy traditional pub, originally from the late 16th century.
Haunted by three ghost's, one was moving about where we were sat, it suddenly became very cold but it didn't bother me.🥶😱😲
Food as usual was tasty and filling, burger and chunky chips and two Sunday lunches from the carvery.
Small plate £11, medium £13 and big plate £15.
Took two desserts home, was really full up after the food.
Have been in the past and was really good. The staff on this occasion were very pleasant indeed. The food however really fell short of previous visits. Fish and chips left a lot to be desired, batter was soft and very wrinkles considering supposedly freshly cooked, chips were a bit on the limp side and the potato was only just cooked, some of the thicker ones were hard. The gravy with the rag pudding was bland and tasteless and the rag pudding looked quite sad for itself. Sticky toffee pudding was cold and dry. The food used to be a lot better than on this visit I have to say. The quality of the food does not warrant the prices paid. Personally I wouldn't return for a meal again on this showing. We did receive a refund for the dessert but would have rather a nice one instead. Staff really nice though.
Popped in this afternoon for a family pub lunch. As soon as we got there, the staff welcomed us and found us a table that fit our pram. With the new management, they offer table service now, which is so much easier than taking the baby to the bar and trying to remember everyone's order. The new menu was amazing, and I could’ve ordered everything on it! I had the hot chicken peppercorn baguette, and my partner had the cheese & onion pie with fresh homemade chips. The food came quickly and was delicious! The staff brought condiments and checked on us during the meal. Overall, the place was lovely, clean, and had a nice, relaxed family vibe.
Finally had my Sunday Roast. Choice of 3 plates, small medium, large. The large plate consists of a choice of all three meats - beef, pork, turkey and as much veg as you can handle. A feast for 3 sittings really at cost of £15.
I chose the small plate - beef and pork. The beef was a little chewy but tasty. Pork was lovely. For £10 it was still a feast, which I struggled to finish.
