About This Pub
So, let's chat about The Assheton Arms – it's that classic spot in Middleton, Manchester, blending a pub atmosphere with basic hotel digs, just a short drive from the city centre. From what folks are saying in the reviews, it's got some positives going for it; the staff can be dead welcoming, and the location's spot on if you're after easy access to the arena, shops, or a nearby pint. It's budget-friendly too, which is great if you're just looking for a simple place to rest your head after a night out with friends. But, honestly, it's not all rosy – there are tales of grubby rooms crawling with bugs and dirt that sound well dodgy, and those shared bathrooms with mould and mess aren't exactly inviting. A few reviewers had a rough time with service, feeling a bit unsafe or turned away, which is a shame. All in all, if you're up for a bit of a gamble and don't mind keeping things low-key, it could work for a casual visit, but I'd recommend weighing up the pros and cons before heading in, just to avoid any surprises.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The staff can be really friendly and helpful, making you feel welcome when things go right.
-
It's in a handy spot in Middleton, just a stone's throw from the arena, shopping mall, and even a Tesco that's open 24 hours, plus nearby pubs and take-aways for a quick bite.
-
For a no-frills overnight stay, some rooms are basic but clean enough if you're just needing a comfortable bed after catching up with mates.
Cons
-
There are reports of unclean rooms with bugs and painful bites, which would put anyone off their pint.
-
Shared bathrooms are a bit of a letdown, often described as mouldy and littered, lacking that private touch you'd hope for.
-
Check-in experiences can be hit or miss, with some stories of unhelpful staff and refusals that leave you feeling stranded.
-
Overall, the low rating suggests it's not the most reliable choice, with more complaints than compliments from visitors.

horrible place to sleep. as two 18 year old girls we were scared. filled with bugs and came out with painful bites. dirt everywhere. we took shifts sleeping so one of us was always awake to be alert. there’s no “private” bathroom, it’s a shared space filled with mould and litter from other people. wiped table with a wipe to jokingly see if it was dirty, came up black. place obviously never cleaned, just sheets changed and not even well at that
Stayed many times this is the best room iv Stayed in still a few issues fast friendly check in lots of take aways for food and good pub near by. But I would stay again
Perfect for my needs. A place to sleep whilst getting together with old schoolfriends.
If I wanted a 5 star hotel with a pool I'd pay for one.
Staff nice, friendly and helpful. Room basic but clean and a comfortable bed - which was all I needed.
No idea why there's so many bad reviews, but it was fine for me 😁👍
Basically we arrived late which the hotel was aware. Upon arrival the man at the front desk refused to let us in and made a joke why didn’t you knock when we rang and knocked for 10 mins straight he could see us. When we did go in he refused to believe we booked through agoda and refused to speak to us or look at my phone for proof for 5 mins. When he realised we were booked in he turned his music up and stated he didn’t want to listen to us. This was at 5am we were waiting to get a train. He told us we wasted our time but again we paid and let them know they said we could arrive anytime. He then refused to take card and refused to give us our keycard despite having a card machine. He threatened to cancel the booking over a £1 payment. I threatened to call the police cause I was in utter shock at the disrespect we had endured. The whole situation took nearly an hour of him arguing with us and ignoring us! The room was so cold there may aswell have not been windows and the room hadn’t been cleaned with crisp packets at the side of the beds and dirt etc in weeks. Absolutely disgusting hovel and that old man needs sacked! We met other stayers who said he was arrogant to them too!
I needed to book this hotel as my car broke down in the middle of a long journey and was stranded with no other options. I had been calling the receptionist constantly to check there were still rooms available to which I was told there was one room left and he wasn’t able to reserve the room for me due to their system being down. I arrived at the hotel around 12:30 (the reception had a distinct smell of drains and waste and there were flies flying about, it just generally looked like it hadn’t been cleaned in 10 years) and was still able to check in which I was very grateful for - but I wouldn’t have been if I knew what the room was like. It was a minuscule room with only a bed and a desk in it with 2 (I know - strange right) TVs on it. There was also a kettle which I didn’t even bother looking at as it was half full of water - god knows how long it had been there for. The actual sheets on the bed looked clean enough but I was still very apprehensive about sleeping in it. The actual bed frame appeared to have cigarette burns and other questionable stains on it and the sides and floor in the room were absolutely filthy and looked like they’d never even seen a cleaner. I went to use the bathroom - which was shared - and wasn’t surprised to find it absolutely filthy too, with what looked like cigarette ash in the sink, stains in the toilet bowl and an incredibly mouldy shower. Halfway through the night I heard someone turning my door handle and I thought someone had just got the wrong room but I heard them use the keycard and the door opened - even though I had locked it from the inside. I then went down to reception and found out that my room had been double booked. It was lucky that I was still awake as if I hadn’t have been, anyone could have walked in and done god knows what. After this, I pushed the desk and my bag up against the door to try and prevent this happening again, I felt incredibly unsafe but managed to fall asleep in the end due to how exhausted I was from all the hassle I had been going through already that day. An hour or so after I had the two men open the door to my room I was woken by an alarm which only appeared to be going off in my room as when I started to evacuate, I couldn’t hear the alarm anywhere else. The alarm went off after a few minutes so I decided just to go back into my room. I woke up in the morning with a terrible chest so I’m not sure if there was some mould in the room that I had been breathing in during the night but the room didn’t smell pleasant anyway so I wouldn’t be surprised. I woke up early in the morning and got out of there as quick as I could. DO NOT BOOK THIS HOTEL EVEN IF IT IS YOUR LAST RESORT, you’d be better off sleeping on the street.
