About This Pub
Oh, what can I say about The Old White Swan? It's one of those pubs that just feels like a proper slice of Yorkshire history, tucked away in the city centre with tales of hauntings and even a spot where the world's tallest man once stood – imagine that over a pint! The atmosphere is spot on, all cosy nooks and vintage decor that make you want to linger a bit longer than planned. From what I've gathered from chats with others, the beers are a real highlight; there's a wide array of draught options and hand-pulled ales that are in top form, perfect for unwinding after a day of exploring. The food's generally a treat too – think mouthwatering dishes like a juicy chicken burger or that decadent sticky toffee pudding that leaves you smiling. And the team behind the bar? They're friendly as can be, making sure everyone feels right at home. But, to keep it real, it's not all roses; there have been grumbles about some meals falling flat, like a pie that was more like a challenge than a delight. Still, with its outdoor seating and courtyard for those nicer days, it's a solid spot for a get-together. If you're popping into York, I'd say give it a go – just keep expectations balanced and maybe skip the pie if you're feeling peckish!
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The historic charm and cosy atmosphere really transport you back in time, with wooden beams and a crackling fireplace that make it perfect for a relaxing evening.
-
A brilliant selection of beers and real ales on tap – whether you're after a classic pint or something more adventurous, there's plenty to choose from.
-
The food hits the mark with tasty options like the chicken burger and sticky toffee pudding; it's hearty British pub grub that's rich and satisfying.
-
The staff are absolute stars, always going the extra mile to ensure you're looked after, just like that server who made a visit feel extra special.
Cons
-
Food quality can be hit or miss; one disappointing experience with a rock-hard pie shows it might not always live up to the hype.
-
It can get quite busy in the city centre location, which might make it tricky to snag a table or enjoy a quiet chat during peak times.

Lera was my mother and I’s server and let me just tell you- she was the cherry on top to our whole experience! I think we struck gold with her because she made sure we were taken care of the entire time. The Chicken burger was amazing, as well as the sticky toffee pudding. Super rich in taste but super worth it. Anyways- give this place a go!

Amazing, cozy pub to visit after a day of walking and discovering York. I tried 3 different beers, all three were great in their own right. The food was delicious as well.
*A Cozy Gem in the Heart of York! 🍻**
The Old White Swan is an absolute delight! Stepping inside feels like a warm embrace from history, with its charming wooden beams, crackling fireplace, and vintage decor that whispers tales of York’s past. The atmosphere is effortlessly inviting—perfect for a relaxed pint or a hearty meal.
The staff here are fantastic—friendly, attentive, and genuinely passionate about making your visit memorable. They recommended a local ale (which was superb!) and ensured our orders arrived promptly.
Don’t miss their lovely beer garden—a sunny oasis tucked away from the bustle. It’s easy to see why this pub is a local favorite. Whether you’re a history buff, a foodie, or just craving a cozy spot, The Old White Swan delivers.
Great value for money, too! We’ll definitely be back. A must-visit in York—cheers to this timeless gem! 🍴
The Old White Swan is a cosy traditional pub and one of the oldest in York. There is a wide choice of draught beers, including seven hand pulled cask conditioned real ales. The ones we tried were in excellent condition. There is an outside seating area and a covered courtyard. The staff are very welcoming and the pub is dog friendly.
The only award the pie should have at this place is “The Rock Hard Dry Pie Award”
My knife only just broke the surface of the crust. Like King Arthur, retrieving Excalibur out of the Stone I too struggled to remove my knife. Eating the pie was something to be done carefully so as not to break any teeth.
Not one member of staff came over to ask how our food was. My daughter’s tapas was baked beyond belief too. When someone finally came over to remove the plates did we get asked if the meal was nice. I replied with honesty and told them it’s awful and I was t very happy at all. They just said oh sorry and cleared to table.
Do Not Eat in Here. York has many many many more places that offer better food. I certainly won’t be heading back.
