About This Pub
Ah, the Golden Lion – it's one of those pubs that just feels like a proper local gem in the middle of bustling York. I've got to say, what really stands out is how the staff go out of their way to make everyone feel welcome; they're chatty and efficient, which makes popping in for a quick lunch or a full evening out all the more enjoyable. The food's another winner – those steak pies and sandwiches are proper comfort grub, served up hot and full of flavour, and it's clear from the buzz around that it's a hit with folks. Plus, with live sports showing and a historic setting, it's brilliant for catching a match or soaking in that old-school pub charm. On the flip side, though, it does get heaving at times, especially when there's a big game on, so you might end up jostling for space or waiting a bit for service. And while the prices are fair for what you get, it's not the place for bargain hunters, and those early closing times can be a downer if you're in the mood for a nightcap. All in all, it's a solid choice for anyone wanting a good laugh and a decent meal, but I'd suggest going midweek if you fancy a more chilled vibe – trust me, you'll leave with a smile.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The staff are absolutely brilliant – always friendly and welcoming, making you feel right at home as soon as you walk in.
-
The food is spot on; think hearty classics like steak and ale pie or a tasty steak sandwich that hits the spot every time.
-
It's got a lovely, vibrant atmosphere, especially with live sports on the telly and even a DJ on Saturdays for a bit of fun.
-
Being in the heart of York, near the historic Shambles, it's perfectly placed for a pint after exploring the city.
-
They've got great facilities like a beer garden, dog-friendly vibes, and a good selection of beers and ales to choose from.
Cons
-
It can get pretty crowded, particularly on busy days, which might make it a bit tricky to find a seat or enjoy a quiet chat.
-
The serving hours wrap up a tad early in the evenings, so if you're after a late-night tipple, you might need to plan ahead.
-
With a moderate price level, it's not the cheapest spot in town, so it could add up if you're out for a long session.

What a fantastic night we had.
The staff are very friendly. The food is 100% Myself and the wife as stayed in York for the week and every day called in to the Golden lion and would definitely recommend calling in if your staying in York. Last night Saturday they have a DJ Russ a fantastic Guy and great music and very entertaining.
We want to thank all staff at this amazing pub.
Popped in for a quick bite to eat for lunch with the wife, ate up in the terrace area on our own. Had steak and ale pie with mash and peas, wife had steak sandwich, it cane very quickly and was hot to eat. The gravy was to die for.. definitely recommend eating here. Our waitress, Ailsa was very good and was very friendly with a lovely smile .
Quite a large place inside, very busy when I arrived. Usual tap beers with real ales and craft beers available. Staff were friendly and polite. My kind of pub. Toilets are on ground level. Beer was good. Enjoyed my visit.
Excellent little pub in the centre of York. It was quiet when I got there but was filling up. I didn't eat but the food looked amazing. The beer was cracking though.
I went back. I had food. I was not disappointed.
Once again the staff were amazing. I believe my waitress was called River and she was an absolute gem. It was really good to see the manager, Lucy, not only mucking and cleaning tables but actually handing out the star of the week prize to another member of staff.
I had the bacon burger and chips and some garlic bread. These were really nice and not too expensive either. Once again the beer was on fine form.
I will definitely be making this place one of my go to pubs on my trips to York.
This is a really great little pub in the middle of York, and is my go-to when I'm visiting and want to go somewhere for lunch.
The food is really good - on my last visit, I had the steak sandwich which was really tasty. The staff are always friendly and helpful, and it has a "old school pub feel" to it which I really enjoy. One one occasion we had to wait 30 minutes for our food, but the staff told me before I ordered and were really apologetic, so I didn't mind that.
Lots of great pubs in York, but this definitely one to check out.
