About This Pub
Ah, Pivní York – what a gem it is, tucked away in that stunning 16th-century building just off the bustling streets. From what I've gathered from the buzz around it, the place really shines with its incredible range of real ales, world beers, and even some premium ciders and spirits; it's perfect if you're after something a bit special to sip on. The staff often get rave reviews for being so approachable and chatty, which adds to that homely feel and makes every visit feel personal – I've heard stories of them creating some of the best memories for regulars. On the flip side, it can turn into a bit of a crowd on the ground floor, so you might end up navigating a sea of people, and while most drinks are spot on, there are a few tales of the odd one not quite hitting the mark. Overall, it's a solid choice for anyone wanting a proper pub experience in York, with its mix of history, great brews, and friendly faces, but just keep in mind to plan for the busier moments if you're after a more relaxed catch-up.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The selection of real ales and world beers is absolutely fantastic, with something to suit every taste and plenty of recommendations from the knowledgeable staff.
-
The staff are incredibly friendly and welcoming, often going out of their way to make your visit memorable – it's like chatting with old mates behind the bar.
-
It's set in a gorgeous historic building with ample seating on the upper floors, giving you a cosy spot to relax and soak in the atmosphere.
-
The vibe is just right for socialising, whether it's a quiet night with a pint or a busier evening mingling with locals and visitors.
Cons
-
It can get pretty packed on the ground floor, especially during peak times, which might make it a bit of a squeeze to find a table.
-
Some folks have mentioned the staff coming across as a tad grumpy now and then, though that's not the norm based on most experiences.
-
There have been occasional gripes about drink quality, like one beer tasting off, so it's worth double-checking if something doesn't seem quite right.

Recent Reviews
Have been coming here with a friend every Tuesday for two years and it has given me some of the best memories of my degree. The staff are so brilliant! ( Special mention to Cal and Molly ) Who genuinely made our nights everytime we set foot in the door, always greeting us with big smiles and good conversation. I don't think I have laughed as hard as when I heard what happened to their plumbing recently haha. Very sad that my Tuesday era is coming to and end but wanted to state how brilliant of a pub this is thanks to the brilliant staff :). Will be surprised if a pub tops this for me
This is a favourite when we visit York. On quiet nights it's a chilled place for a beer. On busier nights it's a good place to chat to locals and tourists. The staff are always friendly and chatty and they have a great selection of beers and ales
I saw the rave reviews, and decided to give this place a try. It is comfortable enough with ample seating, upstairs, and down. The bartenders are fairly grumpy, even by York standards, where dealing with the throngs of tourists. I am sure can be a bit trying. Unfortunately, the milk stout tasted sour, and I bailed on it a few sips in. I handed it essentially full to one of the bartenders, and he didn’t even ask the reason.
This cozy, intimate bar offers an incredible selection of craft beers, cask ales, and unique brews from around the world. The knowledgeable and friendly staff are always happy to recommend something new, making it a great spot for both beer enthusiasts and casual drinkers.
The atmosphere is warm and inviting, with a charming medieval feel that adds to York’s historic vibe. Whether you're stopping by for a quick pint or settling in for the evening, Pivni is the perfect place to relax and enjoy quality drinks.
Highly recommend for anyone visiting York.
Pivni York is a cosy bar. There is a wide choice of drinks including hand pulled cask conditioned real ales cider and bottled craft beers. The ones we sampled were in excellent condition. The ground floor was very crowded, but there was lots of seating on the two upper floors. The staff are very welcoming and the pub is dog friendly. It's definitely worth visiting.
