About This Pub

Ah, the Duke of York – it's one of those pubs that just feels like a warm hug when you step inside, nestled right in the midst of York's medieval magic near the Shambles. From what I've gathered from the buzz around it, folks absolutely rave about the atmosphere; it's all cosy nooks and rustic vibes that make you want to settle in for the afternoon. The beer selection is spot on too – a proper range of craft brews and real ales that the staff are chuffed to chat about, which is always a bonus if you're after recommendations. And the food? Well, it's a winner for pub grub lovers; think hearty pies and fresh seasonal dishes that are made with local ingredients, and at a moderate price that doesn't break the bank. It's clear a lot of people have had cracking meals there, like that steak and ale pie that's been getting high praise. But, let's be honest, it's not all perfect – I've heard a few grumbles about service dragging on, with meals taking forever to arrive, which could be a nuisance if you're popping in for a quick bite. Plus, some dishes might not quite live up to expectations, like a Sunday roast that was a smidge dry, or portions that feel a bit light for what you're paying. Still, overall, it's a solid choice for anyone in York looking for a relaxed spot to enjoy good company and a decent pint – just maybe plan ahead if you're in a hurry, and you'll likely have a grand time.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The Duke of York has a wonderful, cosy atmosphere with its historic charm and rustic feel, making it a perfect spot to unwind in the heart of York.
  • They offer a fantastic selection of beers, including craft ales and ciders, all served by friendly and knowledgeable staff who know their stuff.
  • The food is a real highlight – fresh, locally sourced dishes like the steak and ale pie or Sunday roasts are homemade and reasonably priced, with seasonal changes keeping things interesting.
  • It's conveniently located near the Shambles, ideal for a quick pint or a hearty meal after exploring the city.
Cons
  • Service can sometimes be a bit slow, as a few folks mentioned waiting ages for their food, which might put a dampener on things if you're in a rush.
  • Portions aren't always generous – like that fish and chips with just ten chips, which feels a tad skimpy for the price.
  • Some drinks, such as certain lagers, haven't hit the mark for everyone, and a couple of meals like the Sunday roast came out a bit dry.
  • With it being in a busy area, it can get quite packed, so you might have to wait for a table or deal with a lively crowd.

Beautiful pub. There are plenty of choices to eat in York and I'm glad we chose here. Reasonably priced. We had the steak and ale pie with chips. Can't fault it, good pub grub.

The Duke of York is a large traditional pub next to the Shambles market. The pub has a lovely, cosy, rustic feel to it. There is a wide selection of craft beers, lagers, cider and hand pulled, cask conditioned real ales. The staff are very friendly and knowledgeable about the beers. The pub is dog friendly a visit is highly recommended.

Came for a meal and a drink. Nice place right in the centre of York. Service was ok.Good choice of drinks but the lager I ordered didn't taste great. We ordered food which took far too long to arrive and to be fair, 10 chips with my fish and chips was not good considering how much it cost.

Had a lovely Sunday roast, chose the chicken option it was great but a little on the dry side would prefer it alittle more moist, definitely recommend
