About This Pub
Ah, Valhalla York – what a gem it is, tucked away in York with its nod to the city's Viking roots. From the moment you step inside, you're greeted by this warm, immersive vibe that makes you feel like you've wandered into an ancient hall, perfect for sharing stories over a drink. The food's a real highlight; those sharing platters are packed with fresh, hearty fare that's not only delicious but also great value, leaving you satisfied without breaking the bank. And let's not forget the drinks – a fantastic array of craft beers and mead that pair brilliantly with the lively yet cosy setting. The staff are just lovely, always up for a chat and quick to recommend something new, which really adds to the welcoming feel. On the flip side, if you're expecting non-stop heavy metal, you might find it a tad more on the rock side, and the opening times can be a bit muddled, so planning ahead is a good idea. All in all, it's a top spot for a relaxed evening or a catch-up with friends, and I'd say it's well worth a visit if you're after that unique blend of history, good times, and a bit of character – just remember to embrace the vibe as it is!
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The Viking-themed decor is absolutely spot on – it's like stepping into a saga, full of history and character that really brings York's heritage to life.
-
They've got a cracking selection of craft beers, ales, and mead; it's just the thing for settling in with mates for a proper chat over a pint.
-
The food is spot on, especially those sharing platters like the Ragnarok one – everything's fresh, tasty, and made with quality ingredients that leave you wanting more.
-
The staff are always dead helpful and friendly, making you feel right at home from the moment you walk in.
-
It's a welcoming spot for everyone, including dogs, and the atmosphere is cosy with that Rock ‘n’ Metal vibe playing in the background.
Cons
-
The music can lean more towards general rock rather than full-on heavy metal, which might not hit the spot if you're after something a bit more intense.
-
There might be a touch of confusion with the operating hours, as things seem to vary a bit, so it's worth double-checking before heading out.

One of our go to pubs. The building itself has so much history and character. You must try there sharing platters. Today we had the Ragnarok platter. You can just tell that all the ingredients they use are high quality, it was all super tasty and as usual the staff were happy to help give recommendations. Cannot recommend enough
My fiance surprised me for my birthday and we drove nearly 4 hours to this place and omg 😍 I was absolutely in love from the moment I saw the sign! I'm a big viking geek anyway but hands down this was the most amazing place if ever been too! I could of stayed here all day, taking it all in. The food was absolutely delicious, Raspberry cider and Vahallla pale ale was divine. We thoroughly enjoyed our time here and we will be 100% coming back time and time again. Our next holiday is booked already to come back. They even allow dogs inside which was even better as it meant I could bring my support dog with me and she loved it too. Thank you too all the staff and owner as this is the best place in the UK by far!!
Amazing place, plenty of room, dogs welcome! Super tasty food! Great selection of drinks. Very reasonably priced ! Great atmosphere! The decor is very suitable. Highly recommended.
Food boards were tasty, service was good. Atmosphere was a little less "metal" and more general dad rock (as a dad who likes metal that wasn't an issue...however I did expect heavier music)
The beer on draught was good, the service was prompt and very timely, ordered and delivered quickly, as above not as metal as expected...but enjoyable for a spot of lunch.
The ground floor is smaller, the 1st floor is a lovely spot with a hideaway & the second floor is a private event that looked great.
This is without a doubt our favourite places to visit when in York! We’ve been here over 5 times now and thoroughly enjoy our visit each time. The music and atmosphere is great and very cosy and welcoming ! Not the mention the food is fantastic quality and good value for money! They also stop a wide selection of drinks (and my favourite mead!!) - if you are in York you must pay Valhalla a visit !
