About This Pub

Oh, let me tell you about The Old Spence Café – it's one of those places in Leith that just feels like a hidden treasure, serving up speciality coffee, teas, and all sorts of homemade goodies like focaccia, soups, and brilliant brunch items that hit the spot every time. From what I've gathered from the reviews, folks absolutely rave about the friendly staff who go out of their way to make your visit special, and the cosy decor makes it ideal for a lazy morning or a quick work session, as long as you avoid the rush hours. On the downside, it can get a bit hectic when it's busy, and while most of the food is fantastic, not everything is a standout – think of it as reliably good rather than mind-blowing. All in all, if you're after a welcoming spot for a bite and a brew in Edinburgh, it's well worth a visit, but maybe pop in early to snag a table and soak up that lovely atmosphere without the crowds.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The atmosphere is absolutely cosy and welcoming, making it a perfect spot for a relaxed catch-up over coffee or brunch.
  • The food is top-notch, with homemade treats like granola, soups, and brunch specials that are full of flavour and made with quality ingredients.
  • The staff are incredibly friendly and attentive, adding a personal touch that really makes you feel at home.
  • It's great value for money, especially with options like a hearty brunch for under £12, and they even accommodate laptop users for a bit of work.
  • Their coffee and speciality teas are spot on, with seasonal specials that keep things fresh and exciting.
Cons
  • It can get quite busy during peak times like weekday lunches or weekend brunches, which might mean a wait or less space to settle in.
  • Some dishes, like the sausage and egg sandwich, are described as just standard, so it might not wow you every time.
  • Bookings are limited to groups of up to six, which could be a hassle if you're planning something larger.

The Old Spence absolutely blew us away! From the moment we walked in, we knew we were in for something special. Our Canadian waitress, was an absolute gem, so friendly, attentive, and genuinely delightful. She made the whole experience feel personal and warm. Now the food… where do I even begin? Hands down the best meal we’ve had in Edinburgh and honestly, one of the best breakfasts we’ve had anywhere in Scotland. Every bite was perfection, but the latte? Life-changing. It was rich, perfectly smooth and amazing. I’m still dreaming about it. If you’re in Edinburgh and miss out on this place, you’re doing your taste buds a disservice. Run, don’t walk!

We love a trip to Edinburgh and breakfast is my favourite meal of the day so I’m always looking for that perfect place. Today was our first time at old Spence cafe and I think we might have found it. I had the homemade granola which is possibly the best I’ve had with fresh fruit and nuts. my partner had the veggie breakfast which she also really enjoyed. This is definitely our new favourite in Leith.

Unassuming and down to earth, Old Spence Café nevertheless served nicely cooked food in an eclectic atmosphere. A simple English breakfast (‘Spence brunch’) was made with best quality ingredients for less than £12. That included 2 poached eggs (soft and runny in the middle), 2 slices of back bacon, plus beans, sausages and rustic toast. I chose a seat by some corner books and picked up a Virginia Woolf, one I hadn’t read before. Books are on a take-one donate-one basis so I asked to take it away. There was also a large collection of old-fashioned cassette tapes which I browsed, thinking if they took requests and played Tom Waits I’d stay for a coffee or two. But then my taste in music might have persuaded others to leave so I thought better of it, thanked them and headed off.

Lovely little cafe with a cozy and quirky vibe. The sausage and egg sandwich was standard. The holiday candy cane peppermint hot chocolate was a treat. It was quiet busy for a tuesday morning. Great spot to grab a bite and coffee or escape the cold.

Excellent place for lunch! The food is well seasoned and the chicken marinade is phenomenal. The flat white was very good. I ordered the Caesar salad and it was delicious ! The atmosphere is cozy, the decor is lovely and very welcoming. Thank you!
