About This Pub

Ah, Malones Leith, what a lovely little find in the heart of Leith! I've got to say, it's one of those places that just hits the spot for a proper pub experience. The team behind the bar are absolute stars, always ready with a smile and a chat that makes you feel like you're catching up with old mates. Their drinks menu is a treat, especially if you're a fan of a smooth Guinness or fancy diving into their extensive range of Irish whiskies – it's all served up with real care. And the food? Well, it's spot on; whether it's the Spicy Bag that's got everyone talking or a classic Irish stew, everything's packed with flavour and hits that comfort-food sweet spot. They really shine with the live music and sports screenings, turning the place into a hub of excitement on those evenings, and it's ideal if you're planning a wee gathering. On the flip side, it can be a bit on the quiet side sometimes, particularly if the crowds are elsewhere, so if you're after non-stop energy, you might want to check the schedule first. Overall, it's a solid choice for anyone wanting a balanced, enjoyable night – honest, it's got that warm, community feel that keeps you coming back for more.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The staff are incredibly friendly and always up for a good chat, making you feel right at home from the moment you walk in.
  • They've got a cracking selection of drinks, including what many say is one of the best pints of Guinness in Edinburgh, plus loads of Irish whiskies and other options to suit all tastes.
  • The food is spot on – think hearty Irish specials like the famous Spicy Bag or a proper steak pie, all packed with flavour and generous portions.
  • It's a brilliant spot for live music and sports, with regular gigs and big screens showing everything from football to F1, creating that lively pub atmosphere we all love.
  • They offer great spaces for private events, like the Mazzanine level, perfect for birthdays or get-togethers without the hassle.
Cons
  • It can get a bit quiet at times, especially if everyone's flocked to the town centre, so it might not always feel buzzing if you're after a packed house.
  • As it's loosely themed around Ireland, some might find it a tad generic compared to a more authentic spot, though that's just a minor quibble.

As a tourist I came for the spice bag I saw on tiktok. Honestly it was the only food in Scotland I found that actually had flavor!!! It was delicious and the selection of alcohol was great and service was an absolute delight! If I am in Scotland again it will definitely be another stop!

Came in for a Guinness when visiting Leith which was a decent pint but it’s the food that was the star. The Irish stew I had was very nice and my partner said the steak pie was one of the nicest she’s had. Big chunks of meat in both. It was early afternoon so not many in, but the staff were really friendly and helpful.

I spend a lot of time in Edinburgh, but on this layover I decided to join friends for a walk to Leith in search of a quieter pub with ALL the atmosphere. Malone's definitely delivered! Service was excellent. So friendly! There was a variety of televised sports, none of which was of interest to me personally, but others were certainly enjoying them. Food was super! Far better than food in any average pub. More reasonably priced than what we'd get near the Royal Mile where we stay, too. There was an available table large enough to very comfortably accommodate our group. Laid back, cozy.... A great way to spend a couple hours eating, drinking, and chatting. Plenty of craic to be found here!

Malones is a loosely themed Irish bar in Leith. It's relatively large and has TV screens dotted about so it's good for sports. It also has live music but not on my visit.  It has some interesting graffiti/murals on the walls leading to the toilets. It has a good selection of beers and the Guinness is supposedly very good. The gastropub food is good and the quantities are generous  - the bowls of side chips are huge! Service is good and friendly.
