About This Pub
Ah, The Old Royal – it's one of those pubs that just hits the spot when you're in Birmingham and fancy a proper get-together. From what I've gathered from the buzz around it, folks absolutely love the warm, welcoming feel; it's like stepping into a cosy corner of the city where the staff greet you with a smile and make you feel part of the gang. The deals are an absolute winner – think tasty fish and chips paired with a cold pint for a steal, which makes it ideal for a quick lunch or a full evening out without breaking the bank. It's got that traditional pub charm with smashing decor and comfy spots to settle in, plus a good mix of drinks and food that keeps everyone happy, whether you're there for the sport or just a chat. On the flip side, it can get a bit lively with groups kicking off early, so if you're after something more chilled, you might want to time your visit right or brace for the buzz. All in all, it's a solid choice for us pub enthusiasts – honest, affordable, and full of character, but just keep an eye on the crowds if you're not in the mood for a boisterous session.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The atmosphere is always warm and welcoming, making you feel right at home as soon as you walk in.
-
Staff are incredibly friendly and efficient, adding to that genuine Birmingham charm.
-
Fantastic value for money with deals like fish and chips with a pint for just £9.25 – perfect for a budget-friendly bite.
-
A great selection of drinks and food that's spot on for a casual lunch or watching the big match.
-
It's got that classic pub vibe with nice decor and comfy seating, ideal for catching up with mates.
Cons
-
It can get a bit rowdy at times, especially early in the day, which might not suit if you're after a quiet pint.
-
Places like this tend to fill up quickly, so you might struggle to find a seat during peak hours.
-
Opening times vary a tad, and if you're out and about before midday, it could be one of the few options, but that means it might not always be as peaceful as you'd hope.

Lovely pub, nice decor, smashing arm chair. Great lunch deal, £9.25 for fish and chips with a pint.
Staff are great, beer is cold and wet.
Fabulous place and super friendly people. A great way to experience the local friendliness and character of Birmingham and with exceptional value food and drink. The fish and chips were phenomenal, a real taste of the best of Britain and Connor, the young bar person was such a gentleman - a shining example of the best of British youth. Thank you The Old Royal for turning my ‘quiet evening for one’ while visiting the city for work into such a joy 🤩. May you long continue to be a beacon for your regulars, for developing your great staff and for those of us who wander in occasionally and are made to feel included. Thank you!
The Old Royal Pub on Church Street offers a welcoming and lively atmosphere right in the heart of Birmingham. The building itself has a lot of character, blending traditional pub charm with a relaxed, friendly environment.
There’s a good selection of drinks at reasonable prices, and the food menu offers classic pub favourites served promptly and well-prepared. The staff are attentive and courteous, adding to the positive experience.
Whether you’re looking for a casual drink after work or a relaxed evening with friends, The Old Royal is a great choice. Highly recommended for anyone wanting to enjoy a traditional pub experience in the city centre.
Popped in for a pint on my way to a lunch reservation elsewhere, as it seemed to be the only pub open before 12pm around that area.
Pub looks lovely inside and out, staff were friendly and efficient. Only downside was groups of people already starting to get a little rowdy in there that early, but nothing major that would put me off visiting again.
We looked at the reviews of pubs in Birmingham for somewhere different and this one looked like our type of pub so we went on a weekday lunchtime.
When we arrived it was quite busy but we were greeted by one of the ladies behind the bar who recommended their 2 for £10.95 menu - when the fish and chips arrived we could hardly believe how good it was and how quick it was delivered - in fact I said to one of the ladies I cant believe you can do it for this price.
The pub and toilets were so clean it was refreshing to find somewhere like this and we recommended it to our neighbours who went yesterday and made the same comments as us. The staff were so nice and helpful we cannot recommend it enough, so if you are in Birmingham give it a try you certainly wont be disappointed and if you want somewhere a little quieter try upstairs where there is a lovely lounge.
