About This Pub
Ah, The Old Monkey, it's one of those pubs that just feels like a proper local gem in the middle of bustling Manchester – you know, the kind where you can settle in for a pint and chat away without any fuss. From what I've gathered from folks' experiences, the beer is where it really shines; that Holt's Bitter is a standout, and at around £4 a pint, it's a steal compared to some city spots. The staff come across as genuinely welcoming, always up for a laugh or a quick recommendation, which adds to the relaxed, inclusive vibe – whether you're there for a quiet drink or to catch some sports on the telly. They've got fun extras like a comedy club and special events, plus it's dog-friendly, which is always a plus if you're out with your four-legged mate. On the flip side, it does close up shop a bit early at 11 PM, so if you're hoping for a long night out, you might need to plan ahead. And being in the city centre, it can get lively and packed, especially on weekends, which might not suit everyone if you're after a more peaceful pint. All in all, it's a solid choice for anyone wanting a taste of traditional pub life with a modern twist – I'd say give it a go if you're in the area, you won't be disappointed.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The beer selection is absolutely spot on, with a fantastic range of real ales, lagers, and even cracking cocktails – especially that Holt's Bitter, which is a proper treat at such a reasonable price.
-
The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, perfect for a relaxed pint or catching up with mates, and it's got that classic pub vibe with friendly staff who really make you feel at home.
-
They've got some great entertainment options like live events, a comedy club upstairs, and even darts for a bit of fun, making it more than just a place for a drink.
-
It's dog-friendly and well-kept, so you can pop in with your furry friend for a pint without any fuss, and the special offers on drinks are a brilliant bonus for keeping things affordable.
Cons
-
The opening hours wrap up fairly early at 11 PM most days, which might leave you wanting more if you're after a late-night session.
-
Being right in the heart of Manchester, it can get a tad busy during peak times, so you might have to jostle for a spot or wait for a table.

One of the things I love about visiting England is a pint of good English Ale, and this place didn't disappoint. I got a pint of Holt's Bitter for around £4, which was decent for a big city pub; It was a relaxing pub atmosphere, clean and well kept, sports on TV, friendly staff. Would recommend.
Went there on a Sunday night, the vibe was great, and the beer was even better. Will was our barman for the night, he definitely made the pub 100 times better! Such a nice guy!
Solid pub, can't go wrong. Let us stay until the end of the NFL game which was huge
A real Manchester pub. The crowd is very diverse, here you will meet both young people and quite old people drinking beer
The staff is very nice, the atmosphere is what you need, I recommend drinking the local dark beer (instead of drinking Guinness once again)
Best pub in Manchester. Awesome food, great price and a pint thrown in for good measure. 1000% recommended. Staff brilliant too, great atmosphere
