About This Pub

You know, when I think about The Nags Head, it's got this real endearing quality as a traditional village pub that's been around for nearly 400 years – imagine kicking back by a crackling log fire on a winter's night or enjoying a pint in that spacious beer garden when the sun's out. The staff have been spot on in some visits, making it feel welcoming and family-oriented, and they've got cracking events like live music and karaoke that really liven things up. Plus, the selection of local real ales is something to savour, and it's got that historical nod with the likes of Hogarth having popped in once. But, let's be honest, it's not all roses; the opening times can be a bit hit or miss, and if you're not a regular, you might sense a bit of a closed-off vibe from the locals, which takes away from the charm. A couple of reviews mentioned no food on offer and a lack of things like TV for sports, so it might not be the go-to for a full evening out. All in all, it's a solid choice if you're after a quiet, authentic pub experience in Rochester, but I'd say go in with realistic expectations and maybe check ahead to avoid any disappointments.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • It's got that classic traditional vibe with a cosy log fire and a lovely large beer garden, perfect for relaxing on a sunny day.
  • The staff can be really friendly and helpful, making you feel right at home, especially if you're after a family-friendly spot.
  • They host regular events like live music, discos, and karaoke, which adds a bit of excitement and keeps things lively.
  • A great selection of local real ales and other drinks, plus it's got a bit of history with famous guests like Hogarth having stayed there.
Cons
  • Opening hours seem a bit unpredictable and it doesn't always stay open late, which can be frustrating if you're planning a visit.
  • Some folks find the locals a tad unwelcoming if you're not from the area, giving it that classic village pub cliquey feel.
  • There isn't much on offer in terms of food, and things like music, TV, or sports might be missing, leaving it a bit quiet at times.
  • Occasional reports of staff being rude or the atmosphere falling flat, so it might not hit the mark every time you go.

Popped in here for a very quick pint, I was looking for an Irish guy and his 2 brother's, who do building work, but was met with a strange and very weird wall of silence. All the village pubs on the peninsula seem a bit strange to me. If your not a "local", and ask a few simple question's, then they think your either looking for trouble or money.
