About This Pub

Oh, let me tell you about The Millstone in Mellor – it's this charming 17th-century inn tucked away in the beautiful Ribble Valley, and it's got that real homely feel that makes you want to linger. From what I've gathered from the buzz around it, the staff are just lovely, always ready with a warm welcome and attentive service that makes you feel like you're catching up with old mates. The food's a standout, with plenty of praise for their AA Rosette dishes; imagine tucking into some of the best fish and chips you've ever had, or enjoying a proper afternoon tea – it's all about fresh, homemade goodness that leaves you satisfied. The rooms are cosy and clean, ideal for a relaxing overnight stay, and it's brilliant that they've got dog-friendly spots, so you don't have to leave your four-legged companion behind. On the flip side, it's not all roses; one person had a bit of a letdown with a dish that was too tough to tackle properly, which is a pity when you're looking forward to a meal out. Plus, some of the rooms might feel a touch cramped, particularly the bathrooms, and it's a bit frustrating not knowing the exact opening times. All in all, though, it's a solid choice for a pub crawl or a weekend escape – the high ratings speak for themselves, and I'd say it's worth a visit if you're after that mix of tradition and comfort, just keep those little things in mind for a smoother experience.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The warm and genuine hospitality really makes you feel right at home, with friendly staff going out of their way to make your visit special.
  • The food is absolutely spot on – think hearty, home-cooked AA Rosette dishes that hit the mark, like those incredible fish and chips that folks rave about.
  • It's a lovely spot in the serene Ribble Valley, perfect for relaxing getaways with comfortable, clean rooms that offer a cosy boutique feel.
  • Dog-friendly areas in the bar make it a welcoming choice for those who want to bring their furry friends along for the fun.
  • Great for special occasions, with private rooms and a charming atmosphere that suits family gatherings or celebrations brilliantly.
Cons
  • Some meals might not live up to the hype, like that tough cauliflower dish one person mentioned, which left them disappointed.
  • A few rooms and bathrooms can feel a tad small, especially if you're after more space for your stay.
  • It's a bit of a shame there's no clear info on opening hours, which could make planning a visit a little tricky.

Lunch for three of us yesterday. The two gentlemen enjoyed their meals . I had toast cauliflower , I asked for a steak knife but that gave a little success resulting in my leaving most of it. Had anyone asked I would have said yesterday . Sad as I had really been looking forward to this visit .

I stayed at The Millstone with a friend a couple of years ago, and had no hesitation in booking again and bringing my partner. As before, the welcome was warm and genuine from everyone we met and the room was comfortable (a little small, especially the bathroom, but I knowingly chose a cheaper room since we were staying only for one night). The restaurant was exemplary, in both food and service and I'd love to find an excuse to come back again. I've stayed at several hotels in recent months, none of which could provide a glass of sherry before dinner or a decent port after, yet the Millstone offered a choice of each with no fuss at all. We did meet George briefly, and hope he's recovering!

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay last night. The room was lovely and clean and spacious. We had lunch and ate an evening meal with friends and everything was delicious. The staff were very friendly and attentive. The bar area and restaurant has character and is comfortable. Thanks to Rachael and the team for excellent service and a stay to remember.

Family and friends gathered for our Granddaughter’s 21 st Birthday celebrations. We had a great time from the moment we arrived. We were welcomed by the lovely staff and they looked after us very well. We had a private room and our evening meal and breakfast the next day were delicious. The bedrooms were quite special and very comfortable. Our fun and laughter showed the staff the fabulous time we were having. Thanks to Rachael and all the team.

We recently stayed at the millstone and absolutely loved it, from the minute we arrived their staff were brilliant and very welcoming and as for food WOW fish and chips are a must try... probably the best fish and chips we've ever had. This is somewhere I would definitely recommend to friends and family and it is reasonably priced. We will be back!
