About This Pub
Ah, The Merchants Tavern – it's one of those places in Newcastle that you hear about and think, 'Right, that sounds like a proper good night out.' From what I've gathered, the food is a real highlight; folks are raving about the specials, like that sea bass that's apparently as fresh and tasty as you'd find in a fancy eatery. Pair that with a cracking pint on a sunny day, and you've got yourself a lovely spot to unwind. The atmosphere seems spot-on too, especially with the new management stepping in and making the staff all the more approachable. It's got that warm, community feel that makes you want to pop in for a chat. But, and I hate to say it, there have been a few dodgy experiences lately – some people have felt unwelcome or even discriminated against, which is gutting and not something you'd expect. It's worth keeping in mind if you're heading there, as it could sour an otherwise brilliant visit. Overall, I'd say it's a place with heaps of potential, but like any pub, it's not perfect, so go in with your eyes open and you'll likely have a grand time.
Pros and Cons
Pros

The food here is absolutely spot-on – I've heard rave reviews about dishes like the sea bass from the specials board, which sounds as good as anything you'd get in a top-notch restaurant.
-
It's got a cracking atmosphere, especially on a sunny day when you can sit outside with a pint and soak up the vibes.
-
Under the new management, the staff come across as really friendly and welcoming, making for a proper enjoyable visit.
Cons
-
There have been some upsetting reports of discriminatory behaviour from a couple of recent visitors, which is a real shame and something to be aware of.

Service can be inconsistent, with a few folks mentioning they were turned away for odd reasons like 'no food' when the place was still serving others.

I’d like to share a very disappointing experience. We were turned away from this restaurant under the excuse of “no food,” despite it being open and serving others. From the beginning, the staff made us feel unwelcome and watched us with discomfort. Sadly, this seemed racially motivated. Experiences like this remind us that discrimination still exists in everyday places. I hope this review raises awareness and encourages better training for the staff
We visited this restaurant and were shocked by the discriminatory behavior we experienced. From the moment we walked in, the staff treated us with visible discomfort and hostility. They stared at us in a demeaning way and eventually told us they had “no food” and asked us to leave—without any valid explanation. This kind of racial discrimination is unacceptable and deeply disturbing. We hope the management takes this seriously and investigates the behavior of their staff.
Under new management and the place is great, love the food and atmosphere.
Staff are great aswell!
Popped in here on a hot sunny day, after the bus broke down. Great food and amazing pint, defo stop off again, keep up the good work.
Great little place. Nice to sit in the sun with a pint. The food was unreal. I had the sea bass from the specials board and it was as good as any top restaurant. Really impressed.
