About This Pub
Ah, The Mawney Arms – it's one of those classic pubs that you might stumble upon after a day out near Romford, and honestly, it has a lot going for it that makes it worth a visit. I love how it's got this warm, spacious feel where you can settle in for a proper meal or just a casual drink, and the food really shines with its variety of options that cater to families, veggies, and even those special Sunday roasts. The staff can be an absolute delight when they're at their best, making events like wakes or baby showers feel special and personal. But, let's keep it real, there are a few niggles; some folks have had run-ins with less than friendly service, including dodgy charges and unhelpful attitudes, and things like parking woes or accessibility issues might make you think twice. Overall, it's a decent choice if you're in the area, especially with its handy location near the A12 and free parking on site, but I'd say go in with an open mind and maybe check it out on a good day for the full experience.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The atmosphere is spot on – it's spacious and welcoming, perfect for popping in with the family or catching up with mates on a sunny day.
-
The food is a real highlight; they've got a great selection of pub grub, including tasty options like curry, mixed grills, and even vegetarian and vegan choices, with plenty of praise for dishes like Hunters chicken.
-
Staff can be absolutely brilliant when they're on form – think attentive and friendly service that makes you feel right at home, especially for events like baby showers or family gatherings.
-
It's family-friendly and pet-friendly too, which is brilliant if you're looking for a relaxed spot to unwind with loved ones or your furry friend.
Cons
-
Some staff members can be a bit off-putting, with a few reports of rudeness and even overcharging, like that shocking £6.95 for a Pepsi!
-
Parking is a hassle; it's not great, which might put you off if you're driving over.
-
Food availability can be hit or miss, with some visits lacking options, and there have been grumbles about what happens to leftovers at events.
-
Accessibility isn't ideal for everyone, like tricky doors for those in wheelchairs, and even the hot drinks not being piping hot enough.

Good atmosphere with loads of people on a sunny day, but some members of staff were rude. One in particular was extremely rude and over charged me for a Pepsi at £6.95. When questioned they offered to swap the glass? Parking isn’t great, hardly any food was available to order. Unfortunately I wouldn’t recommend
Today, June 11th, l attended the wake for my friends Son. She had paid £500 pounds for the buffet. There was plenty of food and the quality was good, although the hot drinks weren't very hot. Unfortunately what let the overall experience down was what happened to the remaining food of which there was quite a bit. My friend was asked if she could take the remaining food away. She was told she could except for some items that come under health and safety. They said they would put boxes out for her to take the food, unfortunately before she could take any of it and whilst there were still several people there, the food was taken away. She should have been asked again before the food was thrown. When people are at something like a wake, they do not act immediately and she should have been told the food was being disposed of. Whilst we were there a good amount was spent over the bar. I cannot say how much per person, but it was a good amount between all that were there.
We love to come here as a family. Is spacious, good atmosphere and great customer service. The food is great, my son loves the calamaris, my favourite is the Curry and my other half recommends the mix grill.
We visited the Mawney Arms and reserved a private area for a baby shower. Ellen looked after us and she was so friendly and attentive the whole time. The food was so tasty! I would definitely recommend the Hunters chicken. In fact everyone enjoyed their food. I will definitely be visiting again! Thank you for a lovely afternoon. We were very well looked after and will certainly be back.
Popped in for a drink, door to get inside a little difficult for someone in a wheelchair. However, once in very friendly and polite and helpful staff and cosy atmosphere and pet friendly too.
