About This Pub

Ah, The Marquis of Lorne, what a lovely find in the heart of South London! From what I've gathered from chatting about it with others, it's one of those pubs that just nails the basics – you know, a place where you can pop in for a decent pint without all the modern fuss. I love how it's kept things simple and welcoming, with staff who go out of their way to make you feel at ease, and prices that won't break the bank, especially if you're after something straightforward like a Guinness or a game of pool. It's perfect for those relaxed evenings, whether you're catching up with mates, watching the match, or grabbing a quick one before a gig nearby. On the flip side, though, it's strictly cash only, which can be a bit of a nuisance these days when we're all used to tapping our cards, and without a website, you might end up wandering a bit to find it. The opening hours are more afternoon into evening, so it's not the spot for a proper night owl session. All in all, if you're after a genuine, unpretentious pub experience, this one's worth seeking out – just remember to bring some cash and maybe plan ahead!

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • It's a proper, old-school local pub that captures the essence of what pubs used to be like – no fancy frills, just a welcoming spot for a pint and a chat.
  • The staff are incredibly friendly and warm, making you feel right at home from the moment you walk in.
  • Drinks are sensibly priced, like that great pint of Guinness or a Carlsberg for around £4.50, which is a nice surprise in London.
  • It's got a cosy vibe with a pool table and space to watch sport, ideal for a casual evening or before heading to a gig at Brixton Academy.
  • Some folks have raved about the food being delicious and well-presented, served hot with knowledgeable staff on hand.
Cons
  • It's cash only, which is a bit of a throwback but can be tricky if you're out and about without any notes or coins.
  • With no website or online presence, it might be harder to check opening times or get directions before you pop over.
  • The hours are a tad limited, typically starting around lunchtime and wrapping up by 11pm, so it's not ideal for late-night stops.
  • Being in a quiet backstreet, it might feel a bit out of the way if you're not familiar with the area around Brixton and Stockwell.

Popped in here before a gig and I could have happily stayed all night. Proper local pub. How they used to be. I don't want my pubs with food and airs and graces, I just want to be able to sup a pint or two. Very friendly and welcoming and just what we were looking for. Great pint of Guinness at a great price. Will be back next time we're in the area. Cash only.

What a pub should be. Sadly in London we are seeing less and less proper pubs. But this is that. Busy with locals and a few of us who were off to a gig at Brixton academy, decent price on drinks, pool table, a pub that not only is still willing to take cash but actually only takes cash. Great find.

Great little pub. Very old school decor and bar area, but nothing wrong with that at all. It's a proper pub that hasn't been gentrified. It charges sensible prices. Great place for a pint, bag of crisps and a game of pool or to watch sport. Cash only. Plenty of notices stating this on the doors and inside. But just a heads up for those who haven't been before and may be planning to pop by

🚇 Brixton 🍺 £4.50 Carlsberg The Marquis of Lorne is located in a quiet backstreet on the border between Brixton and Stockwell in South London. The nearest Tube is Brixton. On my way here, I visited 40 Stansfield Road which is the next street down from the pub, this is the birthplace of one of my musical heroes, Mr David Bowie. This pub was built around 1880 and is Grade II listed. The pub has a striking tiled exterior mixing glazed tiles of gold, brown and green depicting flowers and leaves emerging from a variety of vases. Also in tiling, the name “T. T. Castle” appears above the corner entrance. This was Theodore T. Castle, who took over the running of the pub from his father in around 1900. The interior has one singular bar, you can tell by the ceiling beams that the pub was once divided into four separate rooms. At the centre of the pub is the servery which occupies its original Victorian location and within it is a tiny publican’s office. The decor here is proper oldschool with a proper red carpet running throughout. On the right hand-side is a slightly portioned area with a pool table and a free Jukebox. To the left is plenty of seating, a second Jukebox and an eclectic mix of beer signs and mirrors. The beer line was a straightforward selection of well known brands but didn’t include any cask ale. I decided on a pint of Carlsberg, my pint hit the spot, price point was great at four and a half quid (cash only). No food is served here. I arrived just before 12pm on a sunny Saturday in August. The pub was quiet with three regular punters dotted around the pub. I pulled up a stool at the bar and had a good old chinwag with one of the regulars and Martin the Irish Guv’nor who was on top form. As gentrification sweeps through this part of South London, it was great to visit this bastion of this areas working class roots. I love everything about this pub, the beautiful tiled exterior, the preserved oldschool interior, the cheap beer and the friendly local crowd. This magnificent backstreet boozer is a must visit London Pub. 📅 3rd August 2024 More London Pub info @londonpubmap 🍻

From start to finish, the experience here was fantastic. As soon as we stepped through the door to the minute we left, the entire experience was faultless. The food was well-presented and very delicious. Served nice and hot. The staff were welcoming, knowledgeable and so warm and friendly. The gardens were immaculate and there was plenty of car parking spaces available. If you haven't visited place yet, be sure to make a booking. You won’t regret it.
