About This Pub
Ah, the Duke of Edinburgh – it's one of those classic London pubs that really shines with its enormous beer garden, just a short stroll from Brixton Station. From what I've gathered from folks who've been, it's an absolute winner for a laid-back afternoon or evening; the beers are spot on with a great range including local brews, and the food from Jerk Valley brings some fabulous Caribbean spice to the table – think juicy jerk chicken and well-cooked burgers that leave you smiling. It's also a solid spot for catching the big games on their screens, though you'll have to pop inside for the commentary, which is a bit of a shame outdoors. On the flip side, it can get noisy indoors, making chats harder, and the garden shutting at 9:30pm might cut your night short if you're in the mood for a proper sesh. Plus, with potential queues and that one-hour table hold, it's wise to plan ahead. All in all, it's a welcoming place with a moderate price tag that does a lot right, but it's not without its little niggles – still, I'd say it's worth a visit for a balanced pub experience in South London.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The massive beer garden is an absolute gem, especially on sunny days – it's huge, like a football pitch, perfect for chilling with friends and soaking up the atmosphere.
-
They've got a cracking selection of beers on tap, including local ones from Brixton Brewery, plus seasonal cocktails and spirits that hit the spot.
-
The food's a real highlight with Jerk Valley's Caribbean flavours; their jerk chicken and burgers are spot on, paired with crispy fries for a satisfying meal.
-
It's great for watching sports with big screens inside and out, showing Sky Sports and more – though you'll need to head indoors for the commentary.
-
The staff are friendly and welcoming, and the overall vibe is lively, making it a top spot near Brixton Station for a casual get-together.
Cons
-
The beer garden closes at 9:30pm, which feels a bit early if you're hoping for a longer evening out.
-
It can get quite loud inside, making it tricky to have a proper chat, though the outdoor space is more relaxed.
-
You might face queues or waits if the place is busy, and they only hold your table for an hour, so timing is key.
-
No sports commentary outside due to licensing, which could be a downer if you're watching a match al fresco.
-
There are restrictions like no kids after certain times, and the walk back to the bar from the garden can be a faff if you're after another round.

Decent pub in Brixton, huge Garden.. I’m talking almost football pitch sized. Great if you’re after a beer garden in the summer. I’d advise on getting 2 pints at a time as the walk back to the inside bar can take a while.
Amazing outdoor space. Nice vibe indoors after the patio shut but too loud to have a chat and not really the vibe to dance. Would absolutely go again outside and if i lived nearer I’d check it out quite a few more times
Great pub with an amazing atmosphere and a garden. The beer selection was alright and plus a glass of wine at a good price, so it was a winner. We tried two of their jerk chicken bun and they came with great crispy fries as well. The burgers were cooked fantastically and the beer garden full of tables was energetic with a lively crowd. We had a great time here unwinding before our beer tasting experience at the London Beer Lab around the corner. Was really great.

The Duke of Edinburgh is located in a quiet residential area in the backstreets of Brixton. The nearest Tube is Brixton, it’s a five minute walk to get here.
This pub was originally built in 1874. The pub you see today was built in 1937 by Truman’s principal architect A E Sewell. This pub is Grade II listed and features on CAMRA’s list of pubs with interiors of historic interest, this being of Outstanding National Importance.
The decor here is stunning, seemingly it looks untouched since the day the pub was built. At the front is the old Public Bar which has a pool table, traditional pews and its own servery. Head through an open walkway and you arrive into a large wood panelled bar with amazing stained leaded windows. There are some fantastic original features like the ornate fireplaces and the chequered spittoon in front of the long servery. At the back of the pub is a huge sprawling beer garden, I was told this is the largest in South London.
The beer selection is all keg and offers a mix of mainstream brews and local craft beers. I decided on a Cruzcampo, my pint was excellent, price point was a little punchy. The food menu is by @bandobelly who combine American, Caribbean and Asian flavours into Burgers and other comfort food options, most Burgers cost £12.
I arrived just after 12pm on a warm Saturday lunchtime in August. The pub was fairly quiet as it had just opened. I decided to plot up in the front bar area and watch the Olympics, a superb soulful soundtrack played in the background. I got chatting to one of the team who was kind enough to give me a guided tour, what a nice chap. This pub shows live footy, there are plenty of screens here to watch a game.
I must admit, I am a big fan of 1930’s interwar built pubs, so the @dukebrixton was right up my street. This is a handsome traditional pub with a splendid interior. The beer choice, tasty grub, friendly team and the enormous beer garden make for an impressive pub experience. This is definitely one to visit when in SW9.

This is a really massive pub with great outdoor space (and heating) that has friendly staff and a really nice owner. We were recommended a white wine which just tastes amazing so they know what is good.
Lots of different food options but unfortunately did not end up eating there. They also have good prices on drinks and happy hour as well!
The outdoor venue is a lot different from indoors which creates this amazing duality of being at two different places. Would definitely come back again for some more food and wine.
