About This Pub
Ah, The Lord Napier Star – it's one of those pubs that really captures the spirit of Hackney Wick, with its eye-catching graffiti and street art turning the place into a proper urban canvas. I have to say, it's brilliant for a laugh with friends; the events lineup is spot on, whether you're up for karaoke, a quiz night, or one of their themed parties – it keeps the energy high and the nights memorable. The food's another highlight; those Sunday roasts are hearty and full of flavour, with generous portions that leave you satisfied, and they've got some great vegan choices too, which is ace if you're catering for different tastes. The staff are generally a friendly bunch, and the roof terrace with its panoramic views is just the ticket for a relaxed catch-up. But, let's be honest, it's not all smooth sailing – you might end up waiting ages for a drink or your meal, which can put a dampener on things, especially if the team's looking a bit lost. Prices can sting a little, like that eye-watering cost for a few spuds, and it's a shame about the potential for hiding bad reviews, as it doesn't feel entirely upfront. Still, if you're after a place with real personality and a good vibe, it's worth popping in – just go in with realistic expectations and you'll likely have a top time.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The unique graffiti-covered facade and artistic vibe make it a real standout in Hackney Wick – it's like stepping into a living piece of street art.
-
They've got a cracking selection of events, from karaoke nights to pub quizzes and themed evenings, which keep things lively and fun for a great night out.
-
The food is spot on, especially the Sunday roasts and vegan options – massive servings that are wholesome and delicious, perfect for a proper feed.
-
Friendly staff who are supportive of the local area and quick to serve when they're on form, adding to that welcoming community feel.
-
The roof terrace offers stunning views of London, making it an ideal spot for a drink or gathering with mates on a sunny day.
Cons
-
Service can be painfully slow at times, with long waits for drinks or food, which might leave you a bit frustrated during a busy evening.
-
Prices feel a tad steep, like shelling out £10.50 for just three potatoes – it might make your blood boil if you're watching the pennies.
-
Staff sometimes seem a bit disorganised, with no clear manager in sight, which could mean lost sales and a less smooth experience overall.
-
There's a worry about them deleting negative reviews, which doesn't sit right and makes you question how transparent they are with feedback.

£10.50 for 3 potatoes. Absolute rip off. It made my blood boil.
They also deleted my last review, disgusting that they’re trying to hide their bad reviews.
25 minute wait for drink, bar staff spent most of the evening walking around looking lost.
Lovely enough bunch but definitely losing sales due to team organization.
No manager in site(or at least visible to guests), no team guidance. Not teams fault.
Atmosphere great but we had to argue with the people who were sat on our booked table to get our table. Then the atmosphere changed and we were basically ogled all night. Great venue, great opportunity but not quite the place to be on a night out.
Really good Sunday roast but slooww service! We waited over 10 min to order at the bar despite being next in the queue, and then waited another 45+ minutes for food, even as a party of two.
Beef roast was excellent, pork belly was good though a bit dry. Lots of tasty veg and roast potatoes too. Would give the bloody mary a pass next time as it just tasted like plain tomato juice with vodka.
Lots of seating in the place but best to reserve a table if you're a larger party. Would come back for Sunday roast if I'm prepared to wait!
Great pub, especially good for a Sunday roast. We came without a reservation and we’re lucky to grab one of the few remaining seats! Massive servings, as it should be, wholesome and delicious.
An original gem of Hackney! This is a must pub for everybody. Beautiful deco and gorgeous terrace plus extraordinary stuff fast and friendly. Supportive of the area and the artist featuring awesome street art in the façade. Great selection of beers and tasty burgers and fries plus really yummy vegan option such as the chicken burger
