About This Pub

Oh, Grow in Hackney is one of those places that really sticks with you after a visit – it's got this effortless cool vibe, especially on those Thursday jazz nights where the band's energy just lights up the room. I love how they've made the most of the canal location; it's such a treat to sip on a well-poured drink while watching the water go by, and the food hits the spot too, with fresh flavours and portions that leave you satisfied without breaking the bank. The staff are genuinely lovely, always up for a chat, which makes the whole experience feel welcoming and relaxed. But, and I have to be straight here, there are a couple of downsides that might make you think twice – like that security bother that's cropped up in some stories, which isn't ideal and could spoil things if you're not careful. Plus, if you're after a sunny terrace, the trees might get in the way, and the music won't suit every taste, so it's best if you're in the mood for jazz. All in all, it's a solid choice for a night out if you fancy something with a bit of character, just keep an eye on the details to make sure it aligns with what you're after.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The live jazz nights are absolutely brilliant, creating an incredible vibe that makes you want to stay all evening.
  • The canal-side location is a real gem, perfect for relaxing with a drink, even if the weather's a bit dodgy.
  • Food and drinks are top-notch – good quality, reasonably priced, and the staff are always friendly and chatty, which adds to the warm atmosphere.
  • It's got a lively community feel with events and happy hour offers that make it a great spot for a casual night out.
Cons
  • There have been some worrying incidents with security, like reports of rough handling, which could put a damper on an otherwise good evening.
  • The music selection isn't for everyone; it might not hit the spot if you're not into jazz or the particular tunes playing.
  • Outdoor seating can be a bit hit-or-miss with things like trees blocking the sun, so you might not get that perfect view or light you've hoped for.
  • Opening times seem a tad inconsistent based on what's listed, so it's worth double-checking before heading over.

Went for the first time to the Jazz night on a Thursday night. Incredible vibes, incredible band, incredible company. Loved being able to sit by the canal, even in the rain! Bar Jesus really works the miracles back there also!

Security assaulted me on the way out for a plastic glass which is a protective act under the licensing act. Refused to show SIA certification or any form of identification. I’ve worked on this industry for 15 years and never been treated like your security guard this evening. This is a clear violation of license conditions and will be following up with the Hackney council of not followed up on personally.

We really enjoyed the drinks and the food whilst sitting in front of the canal. Both food and drinks were good quality and decent value for money. Staff were really friendly and chatty. The only thing we didn't really like was the music that was playing but I guess that's a matter of taste.

Lovely Location on the hackney canals, drinks are reasonably priced. But PLEEEEEASE cut down the tree a bit on your terrace. We had a 5pm booking and we had no sunshine - the other side of the canal was glowing.

Absolutely blown away by the atmosphere at Grow! I’ve been twice now with my girlfriend, and both visits were unforgettable. The live jazz—especially Stratos and the band—was phenomenal and set the perfect vibe. The food was spot on: beautifully presented, packed with flavour, and the portions were just right. Paired with great drinks, it was all just chef’s kiss. Can’t wait to be back!
